This book will creep the sh*t out of you

April 11, 2015 by Sophia Leave a Comment

It wasn’t hard for me to determine that Sharp Objects (2006) is the creepiest and most disturbing of Gillian Flynn’s novels to date. And that’s saying a lot. Although I believe Flynn’s writing improves in her future books, I was impressed and disturbed by her ability to create a setting so dark and haunting. Camille Preaker, is a 30-something, struggling reporter in Chicago when her editor sends her back to her tiny hometown to cover the potentially sensational disappearance of an adolescent girl–shortly after another girl was […]

There’s Actually a Lot of Things Dead Men Don’t Do

April 10, 2015 by Quorren Leave a Comment

I really didn’t think anything would top my cover of Dead Men Don’t Ski – as a lone skier ascends a mountain on a ski lift, the rocks below form a skull.  I have a handful of Moyes books, no idea where they came from, and they all find a way of inserting a skull into the picture, as subtly as a rhino crashing through your living room.  But the covers on Amazon are all gems.  Like the one on the left, with the Grim […]

This killer uses poetry to pick up women – reinforcing the idea that poetry is bad for you

April 9, 2015 by kfishgirl Leave a Comment

This book is number 6 in the Lucas Davenport Prey series.  I liked it well enough.  Unfortunately a dog gets killed (not graphically) at one point, and I have a really hard time with animals getting hurt or killed.  I know it’s not real, and I have no problem reading about (most) people getting killed, but it stuck with me.  Probably because I read in my bed or on the couch surrounded by my dogs.  Anyway…   The major difference in Lucas in this book […]

I started this book last month and brought it back to the library on chapter 2. Not a good sign

April 9, 2015 by kfishgirl Leave a Comment

OK, so I’ve been reading Harry Hole books for a while now.  I’m definitely into the characters, and into Harry’s life.  I think this book just wore on me a little bit because it feels like Harry keeps making the same mistakes over and over again.  I’m guessing that’s why it took me so long to finish this book.  Like the title suggests, I brought it back to the library after only getting through 2 chapters.  I did however, take it out again and finish […]

Fairy Tales Are Just That

April 7, 2015 by Melina 1 Comment

I went into Fables with no real expectations (lies) but I guess framed against the two things that I have seen on TV– The Charmings (which Wikipedia tells me aired from 1987-88 but I must’ve only watched one show or two) and Once Upon a Time–no offense to anyone if either or both of these things are your “thing” but because of this, I was more wary than excited to read it.  This made little sense because I’ve only seen good reviews and I’m always […]

A Solid Young Adult Thriller

April 5, 2015 by Beth Ellen Leave a Comment

So I read this one on two puddle jumping flights to the wilds of gnat country. And now begins my April of discontent aka traveling for work constantly. This is what derailed my Cannonball last year, but this year I’m just going to skip any of the books I read that I don’t have much to say about. It’s going to work way better, I promise. And I do have thoughts on We Were Liars. So I heard about this book last summer, I think? […]
