I think the darkest place is Gillian Flynn’s mind

April 27, 2015 by badkittyuno 2 Comments

I read Gone Girl when it first came out and loved it; Sharp Objects a few months which was great but not as good as Gone Girl, and I just finished Dark Places which I think was the weakest of the three, but still a good thriller. Gillian Flynn has a talent for both plotting and writing, but her main characters tend to be incredibly unlikable. Libby Day, of Dark Places, was the worst offender of the three (Day, Camille Preaker of Sharp Objects and of course, Amazing Amy from Gone Girl). Although […]

You can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave.

“This could be heaven, or this could be hell…” This week’s review is brought to you Don Henley’s righteous white man’s afro. [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MSvSsNSuVtk&w=420&h=315] Katie: This may come as a surprise to some of you, but I believe in ghosts, so it’s kind of ironic (or something, anyway) that this week’s selection is about a “Ghostbuster” named Wolf Hellsinger and a children’s book author/illustrator named Tristan Pryce who sees dead people. After all, my middle school looks like it should be haunted, I grew up […]

And destroyed him in the end.

April 25, 2015 by janniethestrange Leave a Comment

Reykjavik Nights is a prequel of sorts, telling a story of  Erlandur’s early days as a traffic cop, planting the seeds as to how he became an Inspector with the CID. Working the overnight shift was rough, throwing off his sleep schedule, and he didn’t really like to work. Still, it gave him the time and freedom to pursue his interest (bordering on obsession) in tales of missing people out in the wilds of the Icelandic landscape. Iceland has a long history of folks just […]

Treason and Syphilis During the 7-Years War

April 22, 2015 by Valyruh Leave a Comment

This is Gabaldon’s first book in a new trilogy following her highly successful Outlander series. The “Lord John” series is based on the relatively minor character from the Outlander books Lord John Grey, who is a young and fiercely patriotic military officer and second son of a wealthy and prestigious family. Lord John is also a secret homosexual, a practice which was seen as akin to treason in these tumultuous days of the Seven Years War between England and France, and which causes him no […]

Kid get kidnapped in this one – be wary

April 20, 2015 by kfishgirl Leave a Comment

Book 7 of the Prey series grabbed me right from the beginning and pulled me in.  I finished it in one day, even though it was 300 something pages.   The killer, John is the youngest killer Lucas has dealt with so far.  He’s about 25, and met his psychiatrist when he was in prison for arson.  He became obsessed with her for a while, but eventually forgot about her.  Something triggered his memory of her, and ten years after meeting her, he kidnaps her and […]

Darkplaces

April 18, 2015 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

Twenty-five years ago Libby Day’s family was murdered in the middle of the night. She escaped and named her older brother, Ben, as their murderer. After depleting the fund set up for her through donations and managed by a local banker Libby is desperate for some quick cash. She finds Lyle and his “kill club” who are obsessed with finding the true killer of her family; and they are willing to pay Libby to find the information. It’s a convenient set up but it works […]
