We’re done here

June 14, 2015 by Sophia 3 Comments

I’ve finally finished the six-book Vampire Academy series with Last Sacrifice (2010) by Richelle Mead! And with the conclusion, I’ve found a little closure, some satisfaction, and some annoyance. Much like the other books in this series, Last Sacrifice was a fun and fast read with plenty of adventure and romance. If you have any interest, stop reading this review and get reading with the first book. As for me, I thought I’d be done with this last one, but Mead has a whole new “Bloodlines” series […]

“The Young Adventurers take a lot of killing.”

June 14, 2015 by Halbs Leave a Comment

Secret Adversary is my first foray into Agatha Christie books. My only regret is that I didn’t discover Ms. Christie sooner. While it is nearly a century old, the book is (relatively) quickly paced, entertaining, and witty. Plotwise, it had me guessing until the very end! Since it was written in 1922, there is no copyright on the book and therefore you can legally download it for free. Although, for CBR purposes, consider buying a paperback version! Adversary revolves around a witty couple of members […]

Shadow brother

June 12, 2015 by janniethestrange 1 Comment

Will all great Neptune’s ocean wash this blood clean from my hand. This quote from Shakespeare’s Macbeth informs the title and content of this book, the fourth in the Commissaire Adamsberg series by the French writer Fred Vargas. Adamsberg and a few collegues from his division are set to travel to Quebec for a forensics conference. His right hand man, Danglard is just sure that the plane will go down over the Atlantic ( a flock of starlings whoosh into the engines) and is dragging […]

Another winner by Liane Moriarty

June 12, 2015 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

Ah, Liane Moriarty redeems herself after the quite terrible The Hypnotist’s Love Story with the stellar The Husband’s Secret. It’s very twisty and interesting and even though I figured out “the secret” pretty quickly, she spends just as much time discussing the repercussion as she does the secret itself, so it stays fascinating until the end. And man, are there repercussions. “None of us ever know all the possible courses our lives could have and maybe should have taken. It’s probably just as well. Some secrets are meant […]

A Little Forgettable

June 12, 2015 by yesknopemaybe Leave a Comment

I’ve loved Veronica Mars for forever, so I can’t keep away from anything set in that world I can get my hands on. This is the second book in the Veronica Mars world and like the first, its events take place after the VMars movie. The Neptune Grand owners come to Veronica after a woman claims a Neptune staff member assaulted her and left her to die. Veronica’s job is finding out if this woman’s story is truth, lies, or something in-between. Unfortunately that’s easier […]

Super-duper British lady attempts to solve crime

June 9, 2015 by Bothari43 3 Comments

I’ve never read any of the Lord Peter Wimsey detective novels, or any of his collaborations with Harriet Vane, but now I want to go back and read about their first encounter. It sounds pretty scandalous: dead lovers and possible death sentences and all that. This story had lower stakes, but was still pretty good. Harriet, an author of detective stories and amateur crime-solver, is summoned to her alma mater Oxford to help them deal with an irritation. Someone has been sending various members of […]
