I’ve never been patient enough to be a religious comic book reader – With the pace I read at, where one issue won’t last 10 minutes, the idea of waiting for the next issue was often enough to keep me from picking up the current issue – but I still like comics. I like the subtle and outright humor; I like the artistry; I like the continuing plot-lines (once there’s enough of a backlog for me to read a bunch of them at once). And […]
Two novellas and a short story.
I really, really like Diana Gabaldon’s Lord John Grey novels, but this collection of shorter stories fell a little bit flat for me. I think what I like most about these books is the character work she does alongside the various mysteries, and there really just wasn’t room for any of that in this short of a format. I think there’s a reason she normally gravitates toward longer books as a writer. (Sidenote: I’m currently reading the second LJG novel and I think it’s hilarious that it’s considered […]
The water wins in the end
“When Danglard was in a bad way, the Unsolved Question in the infinite cosmos returned to plague him, as well as the fact that the sun would explode in four billion years, and that humanity was but a miserable and desperate chance occurrence on a piece of matter whirling through space.” Deeper and deeper we go into the world of Commissaire Jean-Baptiste Adamsberg and his Serious Crime squad with this, the 5th in the series. Other than Danglard’s pondering’s, this novel features two pivotal characters […]
Genre Bending Murder Mystery
After hearing someone on Book Riot say that Bellweather Rhapsody was influenced heavily by The Westing Game, I had to go out and get it that very day. As a kid I was OBSESSED with The Westing Game, a smart book that still holds up as an adult reader. While it’s easy to see TWG’s influence, Bellweather Rhapsody is firmly its own thing. If you like clever little mysteries with casts of interesting characters, this needs to go on your list. Every year the majestic, […]
Really only about 10% of this has to do with the damn painting
Wow, this book was long. And it took a long time to read — even long books don’t usually take me more than a few evenings and I feel like I spent two damn weeks with this one. And while I enjoyed it most of it, I feel like it 1. Could have been a hell of a lot shorter without affecting things too much and 2. Was not really what I expected (much more teenage angst, much less art-related heists). “You can look at […]
Vampires should always be this sexy
I went on holiday last week and prepared my kindle with a bunch of interesting new books, several of which have been recommended by fellow Cannonballers. The first one I read, though, was one I bought a while ago in a Humble ebook bundle: New Amsterdam, by Elizabeth Bear. More of a collection of short stories than a novel per se, the book contains several mysteries which are investigated and solved by three connected people: the vampire Don Sebastien de Ulloa, the sorcerer Abigail […]
