Appearances are deceiving

This was a delightful little Maigret mystery. It’s March, just when the Inspector is just beginning to find Paris oppressive. His wife is off in Alsace, attending the delivery of her sister’s child, so when he receives a letter from an old colleague inviting him to the Dordogne, he happily accepts. That night on the train, he spends too much time in the dining car (naturally) and when he returns to his first class berth, he finds it occupied. He is found a place to […]

A sadly disappointing mystery by an author I really like.

I’ve just realized that I really need to keep up with my reviews, as I opened this draft and had to think long and hard about the book to remember what it was about. That might actually be my review, right there. Mrs Smith’s actual review of The Skeleton Road by Val McDermid

“Answer me this, did you hesitate at all or did you see the giant, go ‘Wheee!’ and run toward it?”

4.5 stars Spoiler warning! This is book 8 in the series, and some really big stuff happened in the last book. Seriously, if you haven’t read Magic Breaks yet, there will be spoilers, so return once you’re caught up. If you haven’t read any Ilona Andrews books yet, you should do your very best to change that as soon as possible. They write among the best paranormal books out there, you won’t be sorry. After a period of adjustment after the confrontation in the previous […]

A quiet little mystery.

Here we have a delightful convergence of events: Ms. Was wrote a review about a mystery series she loves a few weeks ago and the first book of that same series was on sale on Audible at nearly the same time. There are few easier reading decisions than this one – Yes! First in the Chief Inspector Armand Gamache series is Still Life. Inspector Gamache is part of the Surêté du Québec. He and his team of investigators find themselves called to the scene of […]

I have an unpopular opinion about this one

Um, so…I didn’t really like The Westing Game. Sorry. I know a lot of y’all LOVE it and it seems like on of those childhood books that everyone remembers fondly, but reading it for the first time as a 29-year-old, it was pretty…meh. Not great. Not awful, but still…. “Friday was back to normal, if the actions of suspicious would-be heirs competing for a two-hundred-million-dollar prize could be considered normal.” So if you’re not familiar with the plot, basically these sixteen residents of an apartment building […]

until next time, sister!

First off, I went into this with mid to low expectations. I just wanted to spend time with Lisbeth again and was ready for whatever would come my way. It could be pure unadulterated crap, churned out for the sole purpose of squeezing out more cash from Girl fans across the globe, which is pretty much what Larsson’s partner Eva Gabrielson believes it to be. But there was a chance it could also be a decent continuation for some beloved characters (while still making loads of […]
