a dead man behind the wheel

September 28, 2015 by janniethestrange Leave a Comment

Chief Inspector Maigret and his associate Lucas have been hammering away at a suspect for over seventeen hours and the man, while asserting his innocence with conviction, has hardly turned a hair. He still sits, with his well-cut suit only a little rumpled, though minus his belt, collar and shoelaces, as is police procedure. The man’s considerable sang froide (not to mention the one glass eye behind a monocle) has unsettled the inspector and he finds himself a bit out of sorts. There is nothing […]

Begging to be on the BBC

September 28, 2015 by Quorren Leave a Comment

If Chief Inspector Barnaby can have his own TV series, that continues even after he left the show, then I see now reason Henry Tibbett couldn’t have his own series set in the 50’s-60’s.  Or at least have just this book filmed.  Mark Gatiss needs to add playing another weird eccentric to his resume. The book revolves around the kooky Manciple family, even though none of them are the murdered party.  The victim is Raymond Mason, nouveau riche in the village who has his eyes […]

That Cover Artist is Getting Lazy

September 27, 2015 by Quorren Leave a Comment

He or she just painted the skull on the plane this time!  Where’s the nuance in that?  It’s no Grim Reaper on a ski lift, I can tell you that.  A skull in the clouds would’ve been more imaginative. In all of the Henry Tibbett books I’ve read so far, his wife, Emmy, seems to usually be a prop for him to take on vacation or call occasionally, saying he’s going to be late so keep the roast warm because what else could she possibly be […]

Girl Undecided

September 26, 2015 by Quorren Leave a Comment

I know I’m not in the majority here, but I just did not love this book as much as everyone else did.  Or maybe I did.  I really can’t make up my mind about it.  I did stay up until 3am to finish it in one day. Rachel is a woman on a downward spiral after her husband left her, her job fired her and her alcoholism is out of control.  She takes the train every day to fool her roommate into thinking she’s still […]

Sex and crime, described in sentences containing five words or less

September 26, 2015 by denesteak 2 Comments

LA Confidential was a present from my boyfriend, a James Ellroy junkie, so the pressure for liking this book was already high. And since I’m a bit of a contrarian (A bit?! my boyfriend would say), I’m predisposed to dislike things that others so vehemently love. I’ll find the holes to poke through, the flaws that are there — whether intentionally placed or not — and I’ll do my best to skewer the book/movie/show that others love so much. Because I’m a bitch. There’s a reason why […]

Tana French is an evil sorceress. Her words are her magical weapons.

September 23, 2015 by narfna 6 Comments

It’s not entirely hyperbole when I say that Tana French is magic. When I’m reading her books, more than with any other author I’ve ever read, I feel ensorcelled. Like, I’m being pulled in to the book with ropes that have been tied around my emotions, and it’s entirely not in my control how much I’m allowed to be inside the story. Her books are wrenching. So much humanity in there. Joy and suffering and pain and longing and regret. All at the same time. Plus […]
