I wish I could be friends with Julia Child

Mastering the Art of French Murder by Colleen Cambridge

February 2, 2025 by Sophia 1 Comment

We chose Mastering the Art of French Murder (2023) by Colleen Cambridge for our next book club book. A young American woman who lives in Paris after World War II solves a murder with the help of her friend, Julia Child. I had never heard of this mystery novel before and wasn’t too sure what to expect from it. I enjoy the occasional mysteries, and I like The Great British Baking Show, but I’m not much into cooking. I wasn’t sure how I felt about reading about cooking–and/or […]

A Lesson in Dying by Ann Cleeves

A Lesson in Dying by Ann Cleeves

February 1, 2025 by Classic Leave a Comment

Updated review from February 1, 2025 Trigger warning: Suicide I received this book from NetGalley, which did not affect my rating or review. Just to make sure people know, I read this back in 2021. I went and re-read a ton of Cleeves back-list. I do feel disappointed I could not continue with her Palmer-Jones series. I really enjoyed it, but most of the books are not available unless they are in paperback somewhere. The Inspector Ramsay series is in my opinion very good. In […]

The Benevolent Society of Ill-Mannered Ladies

The Benevolent Society of Ill Mannered Ladies by Alison Goodman

January 31, 2025 by aleaki 3 Comments

I randomly picked this up, when not feeling my best and wanted an easy romance novel to enjoy. Now I’m happy this is actually the first in a series, and I can’t wait for the second installement. The leads (2 sisters) are charming and their adventures are very effective. They actually had me google things to make sure that they were historically accurate. And they were. I could easily envision this being a TV series, it’s almost written in teh same way, and their episodic […]

Wagnificent tail… tale

Wagnificent V02 A New Dog in the Den by Bethanie Murguia

Wagnificent V01 The Adventures of Thunder and Sage by Bethanie Murguia

January 28, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I was looking at online reader copies when I noticed Wagnificent: A New Dog in the Den by Bethanie Murguia. I did not realize it was book two until I started reading it. There were some comments and pieces that were not adding up, making it feel like it wasn’t the first book. Even if you are the ages it is aimed for, I don’t think you would have to read book one to know what is happening in two, but it probably would help […]

Busy Bog Bodies

Broken Ground (Karen Pirie #5) by Val McDermid

January 27, 2025 by Zirza Leave a Comment

In 1944, as World War II is drawing to a close, two men are ordered to destroy army surplus. This includes two motorcycles, shiny and brand-new. The men can’t bring themselves to destroy them, so instead they bury the bikes deep in peat-ground of the Scottish highlands. Years later, the granddaughter of one of the men figures out the location of the bikes and, with the help of a local, they decide to dig them up. They find more than they bargained for; a corpse […]

Something in the Walls by Daisy Pearce

Something in the Walls by Daisy Pearce

January 26, 2025 by Classic 4 Comments

Please note that I received this book via NetGalley. This did not affect my rating or review.  I really wish I could have gotten into this one more, but it was such a slow book and it just kept taking me out of it that nowhere was anything mentioned about the time period we were in. I of course noted it had to be the late 80s or early 90s due to the mention of walk-mans and the Ninja freaking Turtles, but it was driving […]
