More than the crow flies

Cranky, Crabby Crow (Saves the World) by Corey R. Tabor

April 7, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

At first I didn’t think I would like Cranky, Crabby Crow (Saves the World),  but the twist at the end is perfect for kids of all ages. The idea of Corey R. Tabor is simple: a Crow chases off anyone who wants to befriend him, get him to play or give advice. But things are not what they seem. There is a ring-ring nearby, a secret conversation and message (a sassy Kaw!) and one heck of a surprise for the reader. This simple thing turns […]

The Maid’s Secret by Nita Prose

The Maid's Secret by Nita Prose

April 7, 2025 by Classic 2 Comments

Please note that I received this book via NetGalley. This did not affect my rating or review. I really hope this is the last book in the “Molly the Maid” series. The first book was so good, and I loved how it ended on a darker note, but two more books and a novella, the series has definitely pushed towards lighter mysteries that you can solve in five minutes. My main issue with this last book is that the sections that focused on Gram/Flora were […]

Mediocre Mysteries

Murder by the Book by Ed. Martin Edwards

April 6, 2025 by esmemoria Leave a Comment

I always turn to mysteries when I want a quick, light read. In this vein, I picked up Murder by the Book: Mysteries for Bibliophiles, edited by Martin Edwards. Mr. Edwards has put together a rather dull group of stories. The collection starts out with an odd, brief story about a writer killed on a train by a stranger. The murder takes place immediately, with little background, and then we are quickly thrown into the investigation. In lightening time, an obvious killer is revealed and […]

Lady Pancake & Sir French Toast V07 Whodonut?: A Holiday Mystery by Josh Funk and Brendan Kearney

April 1, 2025 by BlackRaven 1 Comment

Josh Funk and Brendan Kearney had me at Miss Maple and lost me at gummy bugs! Okay, well, they didn’t lose me, just made me pause. But then they had me again at Elvis Parsley.  This seventh addition to the Lady Pancake & Sir French Toast series, Whodonut?: A Holiday Mystery is a fun, cute and different holiday story. While the “Who Dun-it” aspect and the idea of the last book in a series is not new, the way Funk and Kearney presents things is […]

Storytelling Style Grew on Me

All the Missing Girls by Megan Miranda

March 31, 2025 by ASKReviews Leave a Comment

Best for: Those who like a bit of creative license with their storytelling. In a nutshell: Nicolette (Nic) is back home to help prepare her dad’s home for sale. Her dad’s memory is going, but he keeps saying things that make other think he knows about someone who went missing ten years ago. Worth quoting: N/A Why I chose it: I liked another work by this author. Review: I was into this book at the start, then was skeptical, but by the end I was […]

The Deeds of the Disturber: An Amelia Peabody Novel of Suspense by Elizabeth Peters

March 29, 2025 by bjornsnipe Leave a Comment

Replacing her beloved hot and dusty climes of Egypt for the fogs of London, intrepid adventurer and amateur archeologist Amelia Peabody finds herself dealing with a murder at the British Museum. Assisted (or more accurately interfered with) by her dashing husband Emerson, and their precocious son Ramses, Amelia must uncover the killer whilst battling supernatural curses, a pair of aristocrats with shady pasts and no real common sense, the appearance of a woman of negotiable virtue out of Emerson’s bachelor past and a potentially homicidal […]
