Tale as old as time: crime and theft in the world of hospitality.

Welcome to the Maynard by James Robinson and J. Bone

April 11, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Welcome to the Maynard by James Robinson and J. Bone (illustrations by) is due mid-to-late July 2025. This is the least interesting thing about the book and I find publication dates interesting. The real interesting parts are the story itself. The publisher says it is for ages 12 to 17 (very arbitrary I felt), but I could see going slightly younger as well. However, it does have fantasy action and I cannot say “violence” but it is not not violence, you should know your reader. […]

“What good is passion without trust?”

Murder By Memory (Dorothy Gentleman, #1) by Olivia Waite

April 10, 2025 by narfna Leave a Comment

Thanks to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the audio ARC. It hasn’t affected the contents of my review. Another cozy mystery series I actually like! I love that they are going more mainstream, and becoming less formulaic and more creative as the genre expands. This one is set in space! Our main character is Dorothy Gentleman, ship’s detective. She is awoken from a two year “sleep” (characters on this ship have their memories stored in books so when they die they can be reawakened in […]

Unfinished Business

How the Dead Speak (Tony Hill & Carol Jordan #11) by Val McDermid

April 10, 2025 by Zirza Leave a Comment

An old convent is bought by a property development company. Soon, work begins on the grounds, but it’s not long before the skeletal remains of forty young women are discovered. The bones are old – years, sometimes decades – but it begs the question: what, exactly, happened at the convent, where girls with nowhere to go were taken in? Why were the secretly buried, and why did their families receive no word of their passing? The ReMIT team, specialising in serious crime, investigates, though why […]

But Now Am Found

The Hunter by Tana French

April 10, 2025 by Zirza Leave a Comment

Cal Hooper is a former Chicago detective. Grown weary of his job, he’s upended his life and moved into a run-down fixer-upper in the small town of Ardnakelty, in an unnamed part of the Irish countryside. He’s found his place in the community, and that includes his girlfriend Lena and unruly, stoic teenager Trey, whom he teaches carpentry in an attempt to get life back on track. It works right up until the point where Trey’s long-lost father Johnny makes his return from London, bringing […]

Countless dreams, countless nightmares, one eerie mystery

Nightmare Hunter #1: A Graphic Novel by Brady Smith

April 9, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I was looking at my online readers and found one for Nightmare Hunter #1: A Graphic Novel written and illustrated by Brady Smith. Due early April 2025, I almost waited to read it as the cover was not completely “grabbing me” and I was not sure it would be something I liked. It felt as if it would be too “out there,” trying too hard to be funny, going with the “gross out” and frankly, somewhat dumb and not funny, so-called humor. Instead we get […]

“Women seem wicked, when you’re unwanted”

Beware the Woman (2023) by Megan Abbott

April 8, 2025 by drmllz 1 Comment

I haven’t read very much at all this year; distressing work news  in an absolute shitshow of a job market in my field has affected my concentration somewhat. So have I bought a lot of books? Yes. Do I read them? I try? Between finally watching Succession (Waystar Royco is starting to seem like a utopian haven right now) and familiarising myself with the entire catalogue of Kendrick Lamar (upper management? THEY NOT LIKE US). But I did read Megan Abbott’s Beware the Woman (2023), […]
