It was easier to read once I had the mental image of Robert Pattinson as Mickey in my head

Mickey7 by Edward Ashton

July 27, 2025 by Malin Leave a Comment

3.5 stars Nowhere Books Bingo 25: Book adapted into a movie or TV show CBR17 Bingo: Diaspora (Mickey7 and the others on his crew are colonists on a hostile planet far from their original home) Mickey Barnes has, through some truly idiotic decisions, ended up acquiring so much gambling debt that he now has to leave the planet. Literally the only way he can do that is to go with the space expedition, which is setting off to colonise the far-off planet of Niflheim. Unfortunately, […]

Maisie Dobbs and the Case of the Dubious Highlighter

Pardonable Lies: A Maisie Dobbs Novel by Jacqqueline Winspear

July 27, 2025 by elderberrywine Leave a Comment

cbr17bingo Family Back in the day, I read quite a few Maisie Dobbs books, and thoroughly enjoyed them.  The first I read was Birds of a Feather, bought purely because of its wonderfully evocative cover art, and then went back to read the first of the series, and any others I could find in book stores.  She went off my radar for awhile, but she is definitely back on again now. The period is post WWI Britain up until the 1930s.  Maisie signed up as […]

My original reviews and ratings for the first four novellas can be found here. CBR17 Bingo: Favourite (goes for the whole series, and the protagonist) All Systems Red Nowhere Book Bingo 25: First in a series   It’s been five years since I first read The Murderbot Diaries, and it was interesting to revisit the original novella. This was selected as the January selection for my real-life book club (with the option to read the other three if people had time). While a lot of the members really enjoyed […]

“Every house hides secrets. But some secrets are far darker than others.”

Strange Houses: The Chilling Japanese Mystery Sensation by Uketsu; translated by Jim Rion

July 26, 2025 by bjornsnipe Leave a Comment

Strange Houses is the story of an unnamed newspaper reporter who is fascinated by the macabre , being approached by an acquaintance about an eerie house for sale in Tokyo which the acquaintance is thinking of purchasing. It is unclear, is Uketsu writing like he is the reporter, and the book is the article about the events? This is part of what makes this book interesting (also, the fact that Uketsu has never shown his face, and using a voice distorter in all his Youtube […]

Frothy Mystery

No Wind of Blame by Georgette Hyer

July 26, 2025 by esmemoria Leave a Comment

Bingo: Review Elderberry’s review of Georgette Heyer’s Duplicate Death inspired me to pick up one of Heyer’s mysteries to check her writing out for myself. Overall, I enjoyed this light mystery full to the brim with characters. In No Wind of Blame, Wally, the second husband of wealthy and over dramatic Ermyntrude, is shot to death and everyone is a suspect. There is Ermyntrude’s daughter Vicky, who is a precocious “caution,” as one character puts it. There is Mary who is Wally’s cousin and heir […]

Smooth Like Buttah

The Chicago Way by Michael Harvey

July 25, 2025 by elderberrywine Leave a Comment

cbrgingo17 Borrow The jacket blurb informed me that Michael Harvey was to Chicago as Raymond Chandler was to Los Angeles.  Cannot personally verify, at least for the Chicago part, but sure seems to be true.  It definitely applies to Chander’s Los Angeles. Michael Kelly, private investigator/ex-cop, gets a case from his former partner on the force.  It’s an eight-year old cold rape and battery case, but it turns out that his old partner was told to forget it ever happened.  And now when that partner […]
