She might have been lost, but she found herself

The Lost Daughter of Sparta by Felicia Day

October 3, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The Lost Daughter of Sparta by Felicia Day was started as an online reader copy. It would also be finished that way, however, I did not realize the first copy I had was only a sample. After asking if there was a chance for a physical copy, I was informed that there was a finished copy online. Finally! So what should have been a couple of lunches was a several month endeavor. But regardless, I was going to finish this reimagined Greek myth.  When I […]

And now there’s a ghost cat, as if a dead body wasn’t enough.

Something Whiskered (A Cat in the Stacks Mystery #17) by Miranda James

October 3, 2025 by bjornsnipe Leave a Comment

Charlie Harris is a mid-fifties librarian in a small college in Athens, Mississippi, who shares his house with a cast of characters, and two cats; Ramses, an orange tabby, and Diesel, a 35 lb. Maine Coon the size of apparently a Beagle (why this cat is not in the Guinness Book of Records, I don’t know). Charlie, being a proper Southern Gentleman, and a nosy coot who believes he can do a better job than the police, decides he needs to get involved in every […]

Not What You Expect To Happen in a Locked Room on Your Wedding Night

The Honjin Murders by Seishi Yokomizo

October 2, 2025 by jeverett15 Leave a Comment

Seishi Yokomizo is, at least according to Amazon, one of Japan’s most popular mystery writers. His series of novels featuring amateur detective Kosuke Kindaichi have only recently started being published in English translations, and The Honjin Murders is the first of the series. Kenzo Ichiyanagi is a the scholarly head of his influential family, who live in a mansion in a rural village, with a separate “annexe house” on the property. Some of the family have gathered at the estate for Kenzo’s wedding to a […]

All around us are people, of all classes, of all nationalities, of all ages

Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie

September 30, 2025 by KimMiE" 2 Comments

CBR 17 BINGO: Border, because the murder takes place just after the train passes over the Yugo-Slavian border, resulting in there being no local police onboard. Also, the collection of guests on the train cross many borders into many different nationalities. Last year I received a beautiful Folio Society edition of Murder on the Orient Express for Christmas and have been waiting for just the right time to re-read this mystery. When I planned a train trip across the Canadian Rockies, I knew the time […]

Unremarkable? Not anymore, Brian Reyes!

Unicorn Boy Volume One by Dave Roman

September 29, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

One weekend I had no energy to do anything but move my eyes across a page, as I sat and turned pages of a book. Therefore, I sat on my porch, propped a book onto the table that lives there and read Unicorn Boy Volume One by Dave Roman. Which if the cutesy cover didn’t clue you in to the fact that it is a super fluffy and light book, the title would have. Not to say it is bad, but for an adult who had […]

I still don’t understand how you get “Jet” from “Margaret.” CBRBINGO – ‘N’

Not Quite Dead Yet by Holly Jackson

September 27, 2025 by narfna Leave a Comment

This was a bit of a disappointment for me, but I still had an overall good time with it. I don’t understand why Holly Jackson keeps writing books about Americans when she is very British. (Nothing of hers has hit for me like A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder.) There was also a key moment at the end of the book that was totally dumb and out of character, which I’m deducting 0.25 stars for. But the mystery was very well plotted and intricate, and […]
