Semi Genre-bending Horror

This Thing Between Us by Gus Moreno

July 11, 2022 by booktrovert Leave a Comment

This was a wild ride. At many points while reading I was sort of reminded of House of Leaves by Mark Danielewski – although this was not nearly as physical a book as that one. It was genuinely creepy throughout. I’m a little disappointed I didn’t get to this one in the late fall, as it has excellent horror-vibes. It’s also a really fascinating depiction of grief, nailing the surrealism of mourning a loved one. The story begins with Vera’s funeral, so it’s not a […]

Stare into the Void for too long and it might stare back

A Song for the Void by Andrew C. Piazza

July 8, 2022 by KWDragon 1 Comment

Much like its predecessor, 2022 has been quite a year.  I signed up for a Quarter Cannonball, did the reading, then life intervened.  I didn’t write any reviews, which I understand is against the rules.  Now, with half the year gone, I finally have the time to commit some reviews to pixels.  I hope you find worth in both my reviews and in the books I’ve read this year. The cosmic horror novel A Song for the Void by Andrew C. Piazza is set in […]

Hickey jokes, messy eating, and bubble baths.

Fangs by Sarah Andersen

July 6, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

There have been several coincidences lately. The most recent is I just found my Sarah’s Scribbles books by Sarah Andersen, then a few days later I found Fangs by them. Now that might not seem like a big deal, but I had not even thought about Andersen’s books in months (though I do have her weekly planner), and here I am getting bombarded by their wonderful work. I have not felt well for a few days (just the “summer blues” not due to sickness), but […]

Bones is the literal undead and drinks blood, but even he’s better than Christian Grey

The Other Side of the Grave by Jeaniene Frost

July 4, 2022 by Malin 1 Comment

Back in 2007, Jeaniene Frost published the first volume in her paranormal fantasy series Night Huntress, Halfway to the Grave, about half-vampire Catherine “Cat” Crawfield (the unlikely offspring of a vampire and a human), who hunts vampires because her mother has raised her to hate them, and since Cat has never really felt loved or accepted by her mother or grandparents, hopes that her crusade to end as many undead as possible will earn her family’s affection. Cat runs into English master vampire Crispin “Bones” […]

The overlap of horror and reality

The Last Temptation by Neil Gaiman, Alice Cooper, Michael Zulli

July 4, 2022 by ElCicco Leave a Comment

I was looking on the bookshelves for something to read that wouldn’t require too much thought, and this copy of the Neil Gaiman/Alice Cooper collaboration The Last Temptation jumped out. A horror graphic novel seems perfect for July 4 in America 2022. It’s weird how I have learned to tolerate gore and horror, even going so far as starting a Stranger Things watch. But I suppose given the daily shitshow of gun violence, intolerance and repression in the land of the free and home of […]

If The World Was Ending, Would You Save My Life?

Black Tide by KC Jones

July 2, 2022 by Jake 2 Comments

When the coronavirus burst on to the American scene in March 2020, the song If the World Was Ending was cycling through the pop station airways. Its theme of finding comfort with an unlikely person at the end of the world (presumably during an earthquake) felt appropriately melancholy, and perhaps reassuring depending on what your situation was. There’s always someone to love us and we find love in desperate moments. I don’t know if KC Jones has heard that song or not but this book felt like […]
