In Her Thrall by Chloe Parker

March 19, 2023 by RevGirlUtena 2 Comments

Biana Ivyshade is a vampire. A super sexy vampire, who is secretly good. Like, she doesn’t even eat people guys! She’s like Edward Cullen, except she doesn’t sparkle. She was turned by Dracula, who is a literal fucking monster. Every year, she throws an elaborate ball in an effort to attract Dracula, because she believes she can kill him. On the night of the ball, three vampire hunters show up because they have heard rumors of a vampire lady and Dracula, but they are more […]

Dead men might not tell tales, but they can fight Captain America

Captain America: The Ghost Army by Alan Gratz

March 17, 2023 by BlackRaven 1 Comment

When you are tired and really have no brain power, but you want to read, what do you do? I tend to pick up what looks like an easy graphic novel or picture book. This time I picked up a what looked like an easy graphic novel. And while there was not a lot of “Deep Thoughts” to Captain America: The Ghost Army, it was not as “fluffy” as I thought. But then again, I should have realized that Alan Gratz would not write “fluffy […]

The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin by Benjamin Franklin

Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God and other writings by Jonathan Edwards

March 15, 2023 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

“DEAR SON: I have ever had pleasure in obtaining any little anecdotes of my ancestors. You may remember the inquiries I made among the remains of my relations when you were with me in England, and the journey I undertook for that purpose. Imagining it may be equally agreeable to you to know the circumstances of my life, many of which you are yet unacquainted with, and expecting the enjoyment of a week’s uninterrupted leisure in my present country retirement, I sit down to write […]

Which is worse: colorism and classism or ghosts?

The Hacienda by Isabel Cañas

March 7, 2023 by Mobius_Walker Leave a Comment

If you search for this book online the first sentence you will read from nearly every review is “Mexican Gothic meets Rebecca” (and now this review maintains that pattern). Truthfully this is the best summary that one can give. Now, I didn’t like Mexican Gothic all that much, but I enjoyed the film version of Rebecca immensely, so I was a little wary of this going in. However, The Hacienda Isabel Cañas is enjoyable. I listened to this book as an audiobook, and the voice cast did a great job. Beatriz […]

The Hollow Places by T. Kingfisher

March 6, 2023 by Caesar's Wife Leave a Comment

The Hollow Places is an atmospheric and spooky novel, but not outright terrifying. It tapped into my weird fear of roots/plants gone bad (see The Ruins) effectively and swept me away nicely for a short and easy read. But I’m getting ahead of myself, aren’t I? Let’s go back to the beginning. Kara, or ‘Carrot’ as she’s affectionately known, is in a bit of a mess. She’s just divorced her partner and is looking for a fresh start. When her uncle, the owner of The Museum […]

“Peel away the scalp, scratch at the skull, peek inside the mind of Jeremy Haun. I dare you.” –Declan Shalvey, Bog Bodies

Haunthology by Jeremy Haun

CBR15Passport, Different genre horror in graphic novel Okay, I know I keep saying it, but I am not really into horror as a genre. However, I have noticed that there are some terribly clever works out there that fall into horror as a category. Now, I am revamping my thoughts and feeling about horror to say, “I do not like gore for gore sake horror, but a good, not too graphicly gross, thoughtful and/or thought provoking story I am good with.” Mostly. And with […]
