No More Robert Bloch For Me

More Nightmares by Robert Bloch

January 11, 2024 by GentleRain Leave a Comment

This is my second time reading a collection of Robert Bloch short stories and my last. His stories are never real standouts for me and there was one in particular in this collection that was so racist it turned me off of him completely as a writer. The cover is great, though, very eye-catching and a fun example of classic 1960s SF/F art. I wish they listed who did it in the copyright page, but at this time I guess it was seen as work […]

A Strong Collection of Horror Stories

The Valancourt Book of Horror Stories: Volume One by Edited by James D. Jenkins & Ryan Cagle

January 5, 2024 by GentleRain Leave a Comment

Another of my Christmas Valancourt books! I was honestly impressed by this collection. It has a consistently high quality of stories and there weren’t any that I thought were especially weak. I also liked that it was a mix of Victorian and more modern stories, which felt like a good back and forth in terms of writing style. There were some legitimately scary stories in here. After slogging through so many indifferent SF/F collections from the 1960s and 1970s over the past few years, this […]

“It’s–true?” she called faintly. “It’s true?” And for the first time her voice rose strong enough to penetrate the door. “Oh, God–is it true?”

Burnt Offerings by Robert Marasco

January 5, 2024 by GentleRain Leave a Comment

I got this thanks to becoming aware of Valancourt Books and their publishing efforts to reprint classic horror (and other genres). My generous mom got me several titles for Christmas, and I was excited to see Burnt Offerings. I saw the movie a while ago, mainly because I love horror, Oliver Reed, and Bette Davis and from my recollections it was quite scary and in line with the novel. I could go on at length here about Oliver Reed’s ability to play fatherly and menacing so […]

A fairy tale turned horror story

Snow, Glass, Apples by Neil Gaiman and Colleen Doran

January 4, 2024 by ElCicco Leave a Comment

Snow, Glass, Apples was a gift from cannonballer Ardaigle for the CBR15 Holiday Book Exchange. I’d put it on my wish list because I’ve enjoyed the Gaiman novels that I’ve read so far and the art for this short story looked (and truly is) gorgeous. As you might guess from the title, this is a version of Snow White, but it is not like any Snow White I’ve ever read. Like the works of Angela Carter and Helen Oyeyemi, this is an adult fairy tale, […]

Slayers: A Buffyverse Story by Amber Benson

January 2, 2024 by cheerbrarian 3 Comments

Buffy the Vampire Slayer is one of my favorite shows of all time. Full stop. So I was immediately curious about this new spin on an old favorite, capitalizing on our cultural zeitgeist for multiverse properties. Why Buffy? Why not! When I learned that the series was written by Amber Benson, i.e., the actress who played fan favorite Tara? Take my money, Audible. And they did. I saw a three-star review of this story that started with “I never watched Buffy but…” Let me go ahead […]

Talyn: Seed of Darkness is a new comic series from Banished Shadow, written by Caspian Drake & Geoffrey Rickett. With comic one, this is all setup and atmosphere. We start in the past by meeting The Vorden Hunters – Vlad and Amelia. They want to eradicate all magic users. They’re pretty evil and think they have a just mission to save the world from the Black Death plague. We see them fight the witch in the forest. She plants a magical seed to be reborn. […]
