Zombies, and cops, and religious zealots, Oh My!

Revival: Deluxe Collection, Volume 1 by Tim Seeley

May 1, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Do you like horror with romance, religion, horrific secrets and one crazy (and dead) poet? Then, you probably should read Revival: Deluxe Collection, Volume 1 (which includes volumes one to eleven). The gore and violence is borderline gratuitous at times and other times goes well over the decency mark. There is sex, drugs and probably some rock and roll (but I was too busy covering my virtual ears from the saw that’s (spoiler) chopping up a body, to notice). If you have any kind of […]

Growing and Changing: Exposure to Toxins Will Do That

Wilder Girls by Rory Power

April 30, 2024 by Melina Leave a Comment

I’m pretty sure I purchased this book when it first came out. The only problem was, I purchased it as an Spanish language ebook and I don’t speak or read Spanish.  I tried to fight with Barnes & Noble about an exchange but gave up quickly.  When I saw the opportunity to purchase it on a discount just recently, I took it.  The cover intrigued me just as it did when I first purchased it, and the summary was equally tantalizing. The book begins after […]

Think Small

Small World by Tabitha King

April 18, 2024 by Caesar's Wife Leave a Comment

While lurking in the r/StephenKing subreddit (as many Constant Readers do), an interesting post caught my eye, asking if anyone had read the novel Small World by King’s wife, Tabitha. Intrigued, I looked further and found that the book was apparently a pulpy and entertaining entry in the ‘body horror’ genre, with a focus on miniaturization. Fun! What follows is a messy, poorly characterized novel based on an intriguing premise and not much else. What if, somehow, the technology of miniaturization not only existed, but […]

Hollyweird

Coldheart Canyon by Clive Barker

April 17, 2024 by Jake Leave a Comment

I enjoyed this one almost in spite of itself. Being on a Hollywood/LA kick, I decided to tackle this during a space in my schedule where I’d have a lot of time to read. And I was able to binge it in two days. It helped that the writing is good. I loved Baker’s prose, his smooth storytelling ways, etc. And the characters were interesting enough to indulge in. The execution though. That was…something. Frankly, I can stand the weird stuff that Barker is known […]

In Holly, Evil Lurks Behind Friendly Facades

Holly by Stephen King

April 16, 2024 by RouletteGirl 2 Comments

I think part of the reason I was so determined to read the Bill Hodges trilogy was because I knew Stephen King was about to publish Holly, and having met the character in The Outsider I really wanted to learn more about her. It was great getting to know her over the course of the Bill Hodges trilogy, and she’s even better in her own standalone novel. Holly (obviously) focuses on Holly Gibney a few years after the end of the Bill Hodges trilogy. It’s […]

Women Who Kill by Sarah Tanat-Jones

April 16, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Women Who Kill by Sarah Tanat-Jones has its pros and cons. The biggest cons are the triggers. I took this from another review: use of the words ‘trans*xual’ and ‘transv*stite’ instead of transgender, mentions of rape & sexual abuse, violence, death.  Now I take issue with the use of death as it’s a book about women killers, and therefore, death is implied. However, it is the way that some deaths are mentioned or who the victims were that I am assuming they are referencing.  Afterall, […]
