Stephen King is the undisputed master of horror. He’s written about everything from rabid dogs to aliens, to plagues that wipe out most of humanity; he’s covered ghosts, vampires, serial killers, and the visceral terror of evil manifested as a clown. Hell, he’s even covered machines coming to life with murderous intent. He’s done it all. But it took until 2006 for him to cover zombies? Weird. Especially considering that the real villain here doesn’t seem to be the zombified denizens of New England, but […]
Iyamisu. That’s all you need to know.
According to Wikipedia, one critic called this novel the “Gone Girl of Japan”, which is interesting because it was originally punished in 2008, four years before Gillian Flynn’ s most popular novel. At any rate, they both fall into the iyamisu category of fiction, which is Japanese for “eww mystery”, and is reserved for the deliberately shocking form of storytelling familiar to anyone who has read Gone Girl (which is most of us). If you take nothing else from this review – please incorporate that […]
Does The Dog Die? YES.
Hey, you know what’s a good idea? Read a disturbing, scary piece of fiction right after reading a disturbing piece of realistic fiction. Because why not make yourself feel creeped out in a different way? I have no idea why I added Bird Box to my TBR list. A few friends reviewed it over on Goodreads and they all said it was creepy and for some reason I thought it would be a good idea to add it. And having a new Kindle Paperwhite means instant downloads. […]
Don’t expect a happy ending to this one
Spoiler warning! I found it impossible to review this book without revealing plot details that would probably be considered spoilery, so if you like to start a book without knowing much, probably skip this review. Also, this book is a PREQUEL, best read after you finish the full thirteen book series by Kim Harrison. As of me writing this, the first book is on sale for $2.99. In a world where humans are the dominant species, they are fully unaware that there are a number […]
Sodomy on the High Seas!
Ever since I was a kid, I’ve been a sucker for all those Gold-Rush, Man! vs. the Elements! –type stories. Jack London, Louis L’Amour, Moby-Dick, building bonfires to keep the wolves at bay, fighting bears with knives forged out of your own testosterone –type shit. What can I say, that’s my jam. So I was excited to pick up North Water by Ian McGuire, a tale of horror and adventure on a whaling ship hunting the Arctic Oceans and two men in bitter conflict against […]
Write your own ending
Last year, the estimable yesknopemaybe reviewed this book and found it arduous and almost iredeemable. But her summary of the book left me fairly curious, especially after reading The Devotion of Suspect X by Keigo Higashino last year, which sounded vaguely similar. Her comparing it to Crime & Punishment didn’t hurt, considering that’s one of my favorite books. So, given what I expected based on her review, I can honestly say that I was pleasantly surprised for nine-tenths of the book. Though I did find […]
