One part Scream + one part Anna and the French Kiss = There’s Someone Inside Your House.

December 12, 2018 by scootsa1000 7 Comments

Remember a few years ago when everyone was reading Anna and the French Kiss and thought Stephanie Perkins was an adorable, fresh voice in YA? Well, she’s back. And this time, she combines a cute teen romance with a Scream-esque horror novel, and the results are mostly great. From Amazon: It’s been almost a year since Makani Young came to live with her grandmother in landlocked Nebraska, and she’s still adjusting to her new life. And still haunted by her past in Hawaii. Then, one […]

He was having a seizure of projectile vomiting. This was not considered a sign of good health in medical circles

The Tommyknockers – 3/5 Stars This book has some significant issues, but it’s also very good at a few things. The biggest issue is that it’s a little too on the nose with so much of the characterization and subplots. It’s a little too convenient that, for example, so many of the characters in the book are immune through slightly ridiculous ways to the central supernatural element of the book. So the book itself involves a writer living in a small town in upstate Maine […]

A Dark Fantasy Metaphor for Internalized Misogyny

December 5, 2018 by MrsLangdonAlger Leave a Comment

I loved this book enough that when I went to add it to my Goodreads list and saw it’s average rating of under 4.0, I was offended on its behalf. How dare other people not love this as much as me? But I get it. It’s a weird, wild read. The central plot is this: three girls live on an island where other teen girls keep mysteriously disappearing. Something sinister and otherworldly is behind this, and they must figure out how to work together to […]

I Made a Mistake Reading This Right Under the Cold Vent in my Room, I Tell You That

November 28, 2018 by Lisa Bee Leave a Comment

This is probably a story that most people are familiar with from some adaptation or another, but upon seeing the old copy of this book on my friend’s shelf recently, I realized that I have neither seen nor read a single one? Which on the one hand makes sense because I don’t ever really read horror, but at the same time my friend has gotten me into watching horror movies within the last few years so this almost seems like a bit of an oversight! […]
