Psychos and killers and worms, oh my!

The Troop by Nick Cutter

September 22, 2019 by Claire Badger Leave a Comment

Pretty much since I first got an E-Reader, Kobo has been trying to get me to read Nick Cutter. When my E-Reader broke and I switched to the audiobook platform Kobo offered, it continued to push Cutter on me. My love of survival stories, post apocalyptic narratives, and zombie tales is probably what made the algorithm think I’d like this book, but this was not my cup of tea. Do I want to listen to the gory butchering of a cat, or two boys trying […]

Last Square for the Blackout! Also, a great Halloween read.

Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir

September 21, 2019 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Last Bingo: Reader’s Choice to cover “Two Heads are Better than One” I’ve been seeing Gideon The Ninth hyped all over social media for months, and it sounded really cool and interesting. To cite the blurb across the front cover: “Lesbian necromancers explore a haunted gothic palace in space!”  This is actually a largely accurate description of the premise: the immortal Emperor sends out a message to the nobles (ie- necromancers) of each of the 9 Houses in this universe to send their strongest necromancer-heir […]

A Million Ways to Die in the North

The Terror by Dan Simmons

September 20, 2019 by Bea Pants Leave a Comment

I pulled this book from my mountainous TBR pile shortly after the first season of the television adaption dropped onto Hulu. The second season, which is airing now, is entirely self contained and doesn’t appear to have anything to do with this book or season one. When I opened the my Kindle and saw that it clocked in at well over 900 pages I thought maybe I’d bitten off more than I could chew. I love a good door stopper of a book but almost […]

It was his only pause.

From a Buick 8 by Stephen King

September 19, 2019 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

With a few exceptions, I didn’t read any Stephen King books that came out from about 2000-2009 or so until past 2010 when I moved back south. This is one of the books I missed as it came out, and it’s a curious book. Ostensibly the takes place in two main threads, the present and the past. In the present we are watching Ned Wilcox, surviving son of dead Pennsylvania State Trooper, hanging out at his father’s former post and slowly working his way into […]

The Lady's Guide to Petticoats and Piracy (Montague Siblings #2) by Mackenzi Lee

Final Girls by Riley Sager

And by hitting publish, I will be 100% caught up on reviews! (4 stars) Josh and Hazel’s Guide to Not Dating by Christina Lauren I am on a Christina Lauren kick. After loving The Unhoneymooners, a friend recommended Josh and Hazel’s Guide to Not Dating — and about half a dozen other books by the writing duo. So far, I have not been disappointed! “I learned a very important thing that day: my mom would never try to change for a man, and I wouldn’t, either.” […]

Great Horror Book, but Definitely Dated

A Stir of Echoes by Richard Matheson

September 16, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

I really enjoyed reading this one! I watched the movie starring Kevin Bacon when it came out and I thought it did a great job with updating this source material into modern times. They do keep some of the same elements here and there, though they change the person who was murdered and why. I liked that since I then went into this book cold and had no clue who did what to whom or why. I will say though that this book was published […]
