How to Slay at Christmas by Sarah Bonner

July 4, 2025 by Zirza Leave a Comment

Jessica loves Christmas. She makes her living during the year playing poker tournaments, but around late October she travels the country looking for a job as Mrs Claus at Christmas markets. It’s her favourite thing in the world; making children happy and thusly making their parents happy. The lights, the glitter, the sparkle. And after work, she kills people who deserve it.  This isn’t my usual fare, but I decided to give it a go because it’s freaking hot outside and I was in the […]

I Am Alice by Joseph Delaney

I Am Alice by Joseph Delaney

June 30, 2025 by Classic Leave a Comment

Sigh. This just dragged. I excitedly bought this one but it took me from March until June to finish this one. I am not looking forward to book #13 and was told it was a letdown, so maybe that’s why I wasn’t in such a rush to finish this one. This dragged, and the cop-out towards the end so the prophecy they have been screeching about for about 11 books no longer matters was a mess. I just wish that Delaney had focused on the […]

Native American Horror Story

The Buffalo Hunter Hunter by Stephen Graham Jones

June 29, 2025 by jeverett15 Leave a Comment

I was very excited to get into this, based on the premise and the combination of genres. A historical fiction-slash-horror novel about a member of the Blackfoot tribe getting revenge on the people who massacred his people? With a murky supernatural element adding a bit of mystery to the proceedings? Sounds great. So I’m very disappointed to report that The Buffalo Hunter Hunter just wasn’t for me. My main problem is the pacing. People who like this book (and judging from online reactions, there are […]

Much Bigger CW Needed

Dan Da Dan vol. 1 by Yukinobu Tatsu

June 29, 2025 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I have seen Dan Da Dan manga all over social media/the internet, so when I saw volume 1 at the library I picked it up out of curiosity. The premise is interesting: two high school outsiders, one obsessed with aliens, the other believes in spirits, dare each other to prove the other person’s belief is invalid by sending each other to the most likely haunted/abduction sites in the area, per the web. Guess what happens next? One thing I hadn’t noticed initially was that there […]

Night & Day by John Connolly

Night & Day by John Connolly

June 24, 2025 by Classic Leave a Comment

This took me several months to complete and I really wish I had DNFed it. I didn’t because I love John Connolly so much, but honestly this anthology was not great. And when I realized 50 percent of the book is in essence a biography of Christopher Lee and his involvement with a film called “Horror Fest” I should have been fully done. I adore the Charlie Parker series since Connolly has done a great job of blending mystery/horror/magical realism, etc. I was hoping for […]

It’s hard to resist a book described as “The Dark Sapphic Romance that Inspired Dracula”

Carmilla by Sheridan Le Fanu

June 21, 2025 by ElCicco 3 Comments

Originally serialized in the magazine The Dark Blue from 1871-72, Carmilla is the first vampire story. Not only did it serve as the inspiration for for Bram Stoker’s Dracula, it was written by a woman. The novel is just over 150 pages long and is presented as a scientific account of events in the life of a young woman named Laura. The novel opens with an unknown intellectual explaining that he is including Laura’s case in volume 1 of a Dr. Hesselius’ collected papers. So […]
