Do you mind giving me notice when the Apocalypse is about to hit? I need to arrange for a babysitter. Thanks!

Swashbucklers by Dan Hanks

November 10, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Yes, there are a lot of plot point holes and flowing issues and missing information in Dan Hanks novel, Swashbucklers. But (pause) I do not care. This was a funny, easy to read, but need to give a bit of attention to, warped ride. Part fantasy, part adventure, part horror, and a lot of humor cover the pages of this novel. Our hero (question mark) Cisco comes back to his hometown 30-odd years after that Halloween and the “gas leak” which he knows was not […]

The House, It’s Haunted

Home Before Dark by Riley Sager

November 9, 2021 by Jake Leave a Comment

I did not intend to follow one Riley Sager book with another, but since what I was reading wasn’t working for me, and since my rental of this one was due to expire soon, I decided to give it a go. This one is weird. In some ways, it’s better than what Sager has written but in others, it’s probably my least favorite. It’s a haunted house tale and he gets the atmosphere of a haunted house down pat. I’m not a horror guy; I […]

MEG: Generations by Steve Alten

November 9, 2021 by TylerDFC Leave a Comment

MEG: Generations is the 6th book in the epic tale of prehistoric sea creatures and the people who really suck at keeping them in captivity. Yes, a series about giant sharks has more books than Game of Thrones. Let that sink in a minute. At this point in the saga thirty years have passed since the first megalodon (meg for short) escaped from the Mariana Trench to wreak havoc on the Pacific ocean. That first meg was killed, but she had a daughter, the formidable […]

Two Comics and a Horror

Paper Girls, Vol. 1 by Brian K. Vaughn, et al.

Daredevil: Born Again by Frank Miller and Dave Mazzucchelli

'Salem's Lot by Stephen King

November 4, 2021 by Jake Leave a Comment

Read two comics and re-read a horror classic. All good in their various ways, two not living up to the potential of greatness and one with said potential… Paper Girls, Volume 1 A lot of folks warned that this one would be confusing but being a huge “Saga” fan, I was willing to give Brian K. Vaughn the benefit of the doubt. And it paid off. It’s a good table setter for what promises to be a good story. I liked the characters and, I’ve […]

Let’s call this starter horror.

The Year of the Witching (Bethel, #1) by Alexis Henderson

November 3, 2021 by narfna Leave a Comment

I liked this but it could have been better. I feel like with a more practiced writer, this story could have been F I R E, or whatever. As is, it’s just a pretty good story. For horror, it was tame. For adult, it skewed young. (It’s not YA, but according to the author, “has crossover appeal,” and I can see that.) For me, it felt much more atmospheric than a lot of YA. Or, at least, the stuff most YA fantasy authors are producing […]

The Last Graduate (The Scholomance, #2) by Naomi Novik

November 3, 2021 by narfna 10 Comments

Yet another great book I’ve read this year that I really just do not want to write a review for, because it means having to find the words and think thoughts and all that stuff. I always have the most trouble with books I love and give five stars to. It’s always like, HOW DO I CONVEY THIS FEELING which morphs into I DON’T EVEN WANT TO TRY with some whining in there for good measure. I really liked the first book in this series […]
