Doctor Who meets Sherlock, except not really. But there is a clever young woman who helps us get to know an eccentic detective

November 17, 2014 by Malin 5 Comments

4.5 stars From the Goodreads synopsis, because it’s been a month since I read it, and the blurb is part of what drew me in: Newly arrived in New Fiddleham, New England, 1892, and in need of a job, Abigail Rook meets R.F. Jackaby, an investigator of the unexplained with a keen eye for the extraordinary – including the ability to see supernatural beings. Abigail has a gift for noticing ordinary but important details, which makes her perfect for the position of Jackaby’s assistant. On […]

A historical romance with Highlanders and the Gunpowder plot. Yup, that one.

November 17, 2014 by Malin 7 Comments

It will come as no surprise to anyone who actually bothers to read my blog, or check out my Cannonball progress, that I read a LOT. So much so that, fingers crossed, while I severely doubt I will be able to complete the triple Cannonball this year (it nearly killed all my joy of reading last year), if I actually manage to complete my current backlog of reviews and keep going, I will at least have completed more than two and a half the requirement, […]

Shanghai Girls (Shanghai Girls #1) by Lisa See

November 17, 2014 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

Shanghai Girls was very uneven, not terribly well-written, but just interesting enough that when it ended on a cliffhanger, I thought “Good, I want to read the sequel”. “We hug, but there are no tears. For every awful thing that’s been said and done, she is my sister. Parents die, daughters grow up and marry out, but sisters are for life. She is the only person left in the world who shares my memories of our childhood, our parents, our Shanghai, our struggles, our sorrows, […]

Fall of Giants (The Century Trilogy #1) by Ken Follett

November 14, 2014 by badkittyuno 1 Comment

This was a phenomenal book. I’m sad that my experience with Ken Follett novels for years was with his shorter novels, like The Third Twin and The Key to Rebecca, that I mainly read for the dirty bits (I think I read The Third Twin went I was 13–several times). I discovered him as a historical fiction writer last year when I read the two Pillars of Earth books, and knew I needed to find more like that. A few weeks ago, I started the first of the Century Trilogy, titled Fall […]

Jane Austen meets Gosford Park and Downton Abbey

November 14, 2014 by Sophia 3 Comments

“The room was dull now, and meaningless, with the young ladies gone from it. They were both lovely, almost luminous. And Sarah was, she knew, as she slipped along the servants’ corridor, and then up the stairs to the attic to hang her new dress on the rail, just one of the many shadows that ebbed and tugged at the edges of the light.” (53) It’s one thing to tell a new story with the basic plot of Austen’s novels, such as Bridget Jones’s Diary […]

How drunken hijinks can bag you a Duke and a fortune

November 8, 2014 by Malin 2 Comments

One evening, when Lady Emma Avery, popularly known in the ton as “London’s Least Likely to Misbehave” is getting drunk with her two best friends (who are also wallflowers who will be meeting their intended husbands in later books). While she isn’t noticed by most of polite society, Emma does have a young man whom she dreams of a future with, but after three years, he’s still not shown any signs of proposing to her. Her friends joke about how she might get more attention […]
