Escape from Shangri-la

January 28, 2015 by Caitlin_D 1 Comment

I was so bummed when I read badkittyuno’s review last year and realized that, since it was an audiobook, I couldn’t immediately borrow Lost in Shangri-La. “At two o’clock in the afternoon it was time to go. As the passengers lined up outside the Gremlin Special, Prossen told them to expect the tour to last three hours.” In May of 1945 a morale-boosting plane ride crashed over an unexplored Dutch New Guinea valley servicemen called Shangri-la. Three survivors emerged from the crash: a lieutenant whose […]

Needs more maps, otherwise YUM.

First of all, I very much regret my decision not to buy a copy of this book. I waited FOREVER on my library’s wait-list for it, and then when I did finally get it and saw all the beautimous illustrations, I spent about thirty minutes just gazing at them all, and then I put the book down and cried piteously for a while. The illustrations are a huge draw, but also, the book is just fun. It is most definitely not for casual fans of […]

The badinage makes it worth your while

All it took was Cannonballer Beth Ellen to say “fun banter” and I was typing in A Week to be Wicked (2012) by Tessa Dare into my library’s catalog search. This is my first Tessa Dare novel, and even though it’s not quite up there with my favorites, it was fun and enjoyable. I’m planning on reading at least one more book in the series, maybe even more. A Week to be Wicked is actually the second book of what I think is a four-book […]

They Didn’t Always Choose to Give Them Up

January 25, 2015 by ASKReviews 4 Comments

I’m not sure what drew me to this book. I’m not adopted, and I’m not aware of anyone close to me who was either adopted or surrendered a child for adoption. But it was probably the subtitle that pulled me in: ‘The hidden history of women who surrendered children for adoption in the decades before Roe v. Wade.’ The ‘solution’ to unplanned pregnancies for many anti-choice people is for the woman to carry the pregnancy to term and then surrender the child for adoption. That […]

A great book marred by the absence of vampires.

January 25, 2015 by ingres77 7 Comments

Perhaps the most spectacular thing about this book is that it takes arguably the most mythologized president in US history – Abraham Lincoln – and builds a compelling and detailed account of his life and administration without losing any kind of emotional impact. We all know what happens, here. We all know who Lincoln was (more or less), and we all know that he was one of the greatest presidents (more or less), and we all know that this ends in tragedy. But the simultaneous […]

A historical romance with a revenge plot

January 24, 2015 by Malin 2 Comments

No one ever expected Julian Fortescue to end up becoming a Duke, least of all himself. But after a series of tragic accidents, illnesses and old age kills off most of his male relatives, Julian finds himself as Duke of Denford. As this book begins, he is also actually a wealthy man, having come to a settlement with all of his relatives that means he has the money to support himself in style. This doesn’t escape the notice of his dear mother, who promtly arrives […]
