There is a series of these books (I think I’ve already covered one of them) all basically containing short mysteries written by authors who specialize in different parts of the Medieval era. Each story/mystery revolves around a common theme or idea. In this book, all the stories center on a relic – a piece of the true cross. Oh, and a murder or two. Or are they? (Murders, that is). The relic starts out in Jerusalem in 1100, during the Crusades. It makes its way […]
“I learned long ago that loss is not only probable but inevitable”
I had put off reading this one for a while, because I expected it to be depressing. It was sad, but not depressing — enough hopeful and wonderful things happen to balance out the parts that make you want to cry. “Do you believe in spirits? Or ghosts?…Yes, I do. I believe in ghosts….They’re the ones who haunt us. The ones who have left us behind.” Vivian Daly, a widow in her 90s, spend some time on an “orphan train” when she was a little girl. […]
Well-Behaved Women Seldom Make History
I’m a bit hesitant on picking up a book made from a blog. It’s just the content of some blogs don’t really lend themselves that well to physical media. And that’s where most of my problem with this book comes in. When I’m on the internet, I am totally down to read listicles because I’m usually looking for quick bites of information as a sort of short break from something. If something in the list interests me, I have the whole internet at my fingertips […]
A delightful little picture book
Princess Pinecone wants to be a warrior and get cool trophies or weapons, but instead she tends to get big fuzzy sweaters. For her birthday this year, what she wants the more than anything is a horse. A big, brave, strong horse. A warrior horse, fit for the warrior princess that she is. Her parents really do try, but instead, she gets a pony. A little round, yellow pony who likes to eat pretty much everything and fart a lot. Princess Pinecone valiantly tries to […]
A historical romance with seasonal cheer
3.5 stars After Miss Louisa Oliver broke her betrothal to Viscount Matheson, her step-sister and former intended was subjected to quite a scandal, due to the gossipping ways of Matheson’s friend, the dissolute Alexander Edgware, Lord Xavier. Matheson and Louisa’s step-sister got married, and the scandal passed, but Xavier isn’t really a favourite in the Oliver or Matheson family circles any more. So when Louisa, with her formidable aunt as chaperone, receives an invitation to his house party, rumoured to be quite a raucous event, […]
Pretty great except for the musical interludes
When I bought this book of essays by Sarah Vowell, it didn’t occur to me that the 2002 publishing date would be so noticeable while reading it. Don’t get me wrong, I really enjoyed reading The Partly Cloudy Patriot, but it was thoroughly weird being thrust back into the days of the Bush v. Gore clusterfuck and the years leading up to 9-11. I was a non-voting teenager back then, so while I remember the highlights, I wasn’t exactly keeping up with politics. There is […]
