Revisiting one of the first historical romances I read to rediscover my love of the genre

February 21, 2016 by Malin 4 Comments

Miss Daphne Bridgerton is one of the oversized Bridgerton brood (there are eight of them in total). She is the eldest daughter and her mother despairs that she isn’t really attracting promising suitors. Not that it’s all that easy with three overprotective elder brothers who can scare off anyone but the staunchest at heart, or the fact that most male members of the ton regard her as a very good sport, but certainly not an exciting marriage prospect. So when she runs into her brother […]

Capital Dames

February 21, 2016 by sarah_jwh Leave a Comment

This review is for the audiobook version of Civil War Dames. I enjoyed listening to this book, but I did have a hard time following the timeline. It was difficult to know when she was quoting the women and when she was summarizing. I also had a hard time keeping track of whose story she was telling. I understand the need to go back and forth between the women as time progressed, rather than telling each story fully and repeating the benchmark events, but […]

I was lulled into liking it by the Irish accents, but quickly realized my mistake

February 19, 2016 by badkittyuno 5 Comments

I listened to the audio version of this, and realized about halfway through that while the Irish accents were lovely, and the writing was very pretty, that I actually totally hated the wishy washy main character — and nothing ever really happens.  “She thought it was strange that the mere sensation of savouring the prospect of something could make her think for a while that is must be the prospect of home.” Eilis Lacey is a young lady living in Ireland with her mother and older […]

The devil is bathed in blue light, rides a white horse, and is voted into office.

February 19, 2016 by ingres77 1 Comment

As the sun descended in the west, a restless crowd gathered before a cedar tree. There was a chill in the December air, and it was thick with the tangy smell of sweat, fear and anticipation for what was about to happen. Boxed in by cars, a young 20 year old man named Cordie Cheek stood before a ladder with a rope around his neck. A teeming mass of men, women, and children threw epithets at him, and shared a palpable sense that justice was […]

Stories Can Save Us

February 18, 2016 by Melina 8 Comments

The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien is a collection of short stories that revolve about a group of soldiers in the Vietnam War.  The most interesting thing about the book to me is that Tim O’Brien is a Vietnam War veteran and he puts himself into the book as a character.  He needs to tell his story, he needs to release the memories and yet, he doesn’t quite want to give a factual account of what happened to him and his friends there.  So […]

“Who needs flowers? Roses fade, but flaky soap available from the PX lasted months. “

February 17, 2016 by faintingviolet 3 Comments

I loved the topic of this book, I wasn’t so much in love with its execution. I listened to this one via audiobook, as has become a new obsession of mine, and I’ve noticed that listening to books as opposed to reading them can really highlight poor editorial choices. There were many cases in the course of reading this book where we were revisiting information for the third or fourth time and it bothered me. Not enough to stop listening to this book, but enough […]
