Less inconvenient and more just plain busy duke

My Inconvenient Duke by Loretta Chase

February 18, 2025 by Jen K Leave a Comment

I always look forward to Loretta Chase because there is something about her novels that is just entertaining, even when they get ridiculous. My favorite of hers is probably Mr. Impossible (it’s just the personality of Thor in Thor: Ragnarok meets The Mummy) though I also quite enjoy her Dressmakers series. Overall, I have enjoyed her Difficult Dukes series though this is the weakest of the 3. The first half of the book reads very much like a classic romance novel, and then the second […]

Family, traditions, loss, home

Little Moons by Jen Storm and Ryan Howe

February 18, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I needed more than the sixty-odd pages in the graphic novel, Little Moons by Jen Storm and Ryan Howe. I needed to see more about the family, the relationships, the other women who have gone missing. I needed to see the community. I need to see what is being done to locate our character. And yet, that is the point. We do not always get that neat bow to tie the story up. There is no happy ever after for Chelsea and so many girls […]

A madcap road trip (with zebras)

Earl Crush by Alexandra Vasti

February 17, 2025 by Malin Leave a Comment

3.5 stars Nowhere Books Bingo 25: Book about a road trip or travelling Disclaimer! This was an ARC granted to me from St. Martin’s Press through NetGalley. My opinions are my own. Lydia Hope-Wallace is a wallflower, and perfectly happy to remain so, because she has crippling social anxiety and tends to throw up if forced to interact too much with people outside her immediate family or friends. She’s been secretly writing seditious pamphlets and publishing them anonymously for the past three years, and for […]

You Cannot See the Face of God

Pavil's Mask by Jérémy Perrodeau

February 14, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Point one: I read Pavil’s Mask by Jérémy Perrodeau in English, though my images taken from the online reader site I was reading this from, are in what I am assuming is French.  Point two: I know I say it often, but this book was f’d up! But not in a bad way. Or even, a good way. It is what it is. The story is based in a Chinese lore and has feelings of other Asian cultures and Indigenous cultures with a large and […]

Yeah, I’d read it again

Continental Drifter by Kathy MacLeod

February 14, 2025 by BlackRaven 3 Comments

Honestly, there are not many surprises in Continental Drifter by Kathy MacLeod. Granted, there might be a few “oh didn’t expect that to go exactly that way,” but for the most part, you know where our narrator is going and how things will probably turn out. Yet, it is an enjoyable read for the adult reader and the pre-teen/early teen will experience it new. We follow Kathy’s (based on the author’s own experiences) story as family, friendship and belonging all come together. This makes a […]

“Women can be heroes.”

The Women by Kristin Hannah

February 13, 2025 by Sophia Leave a Comment

The Women (2024) is now the third book I’ve read by Kristin Hannah. I started with The Great Alone, which I loved. Then I moved on to The Nightingale, which I’d seen on countless ‘best of’ lists. There were some good things about The Nightingale, but on the whole, I was disappointed with it. So, it was with just a little bit of trepidation that I started The Women. Fortunately, I thought The Women was a very good book. I would put it behind The Great Alone, but significantly ahead of The Nightingale. The […]
