Julia Quinn goes Georgian

December 27, 2016 by Malin Leave a Comment

3.5 stars Sibylla “Billie” Bridgerton has always been a tomboy. As a girl, she ran wild with the neighbouring Rokesby children, and it’s been long expected that she’ll end up marrying either of the younger sons, Edward or Andrew. She’s doesn’t really mind the idea herself, but marriage is the furthest thing from her mind, even after her best friend, Mary Rokesby goes off to marry her eldest brother George’s best friend. After all, if Billie gets married, whose going to oversee the running of […]

A World War II story that did not impress

December 26, 2016 by bonnie Leave a Comment

For years, I’ve heard a lot about the film adaptation of The Bridge over the River Kwai, and I was interested in reading the book before seeing the film. I found an old paperback copy at a yard sale and decided to give it a go, I don’t know how many years ago. Thankfully, now is its time. And I have made an indent in my stack of unread books. Read my full review for my assessment.

Until the movie comes out, whet your appetite with the book!

I saw a movie trailer for Hidden Figures a few months ago and FREAKED OUT. I believe that African-American representation and history is important to the American story. BUT, when those stories are so often reduced to two experiences—slavery and Civil Rights—we get an incomplete story. We need art that’s more inclusive and less reductive. I very much hope that Hidden Figures as a film can be that art. But in the meantime, I discovered there was a book and devoured it in a few […]

The book that ate November (The Count of Monte Cristo)

December 26, 2016 by Malin 1 Comment

4.5 stars Young sailor Edmond Dantés is well-meaning, kind and really rather naive, wanting nothing more than to make enough money to take care of his elderly father and marry his beloved Mercedes. There are other, less well-meaning people in his life who want what he has and are prepared to frame Dantés for treason to get these things. While celebrating his engagement to Mercedes, Dantés is arrested, charged with aiding in a plot to restore the exiled Napoleon to the throne. The anonymous scheming […]

No mourners, no funerals

Spoiler warning! There will be some spoilers for Six of Crows and Ruin and Rising, the final book in Bardugo’s Grisha trilogy in this review. There will also be some spoilers about the ending of this book, which means it’s best to avoid this whole review until you’ve read both these excellent books (and possibly the Grisha trilogy as well.) Kaz Brekker and his crew have just pulled off a heist so daring even they didn’t think they’d survive. But instead of divvying up a […]
