Cross-Dressing Lesbians aren’t as much fun when there isn’t any magic

January 26, 2017 by melanir Leave a Comment

Tipping the Velvet by Sarah Waters is a lesbian romance novel set in late Victorian England, and it’s fine. I guess? I have absolutely no idea why I don’t like this book more than I do, but in instead of loving it I’m pretty meh on the whole thing and I want to work out why. The plot really is a romance plot; Nancy is a young fishmonger’s daughter who falls hard for the male impersonating stage performer Kitty Butler. She manages to work her […]

“Oh, aye, Sassenach. I am your master . . . and you’re mine. Seems I canna possess your soul without losing my own.”

So one of my goals for CBR this year is to go through the Outlander series again (which I’ve read through several times over the last decade), this time exclusively on audiobook. The first book is the shortest, and clocks in at 32 hours — so I have a feeling this is going to take a good amount of time. It’s a wonderful listening experience though, especially if you enjoy the accents, which I do! So if you’re not familiar with the story of Outlander: our hero […]

Time rises and rises, and when it reaches the level of your eyes you drown.

“Having long ago whispered I want to die, I now realize that this wish will indeed be fulfilled, and sooner rather than later. No matter that I’ve changed my mind about it.” Atwood, having once written the Handmaid’s tale can do no wrong in my eyes. I trust her to the end of the Earth and back. And much of this book, I’ll admit, had to be read on that trust. This is not a whirlpool of a book, nowhere does is suck you in, […]

A time travel romance for the ages

January 23, 2017 by WistfulCynic 3 Comments

A mention of time-travel romances in the comments of another review inspired me to revisit my very favourite time-travel romance, Son of the Morning, by Linda Howard. I first read this book 10+ years ago and was completely gripped from beginning to end. I’ve since re-read it several times. It’s one that never gets old for me. Perhaps ironically, what I love most about this book is not the time travel or the romance. In fact, those parts are my least favourite. What I love […]

The problem with my life was that it was someone else’s idea.

January 22, 2017 by Malin 2 Comments

4.5 stars Aristotle “Ari” is a conflicted teenager growing up in El Paso in the late 1980s. He’s sixteen and a loner, but doesn’t really mind his lack of friends. He’s very close to his mother, whose a high school teacher (not at Ari’s school), but wishes he could talk to his dad, a Vietnam vet about, well, anything really. The youngest of his family, Ari’s twin sisters are much older than him and his brother is in prison, never spoken about by anyone in […]

False Smiles And Coded Letters

January 22, 2017 by BlackRabbit 2 Comments

A consul could be a valuable witness and resource to his superiors during a time of unrest, and the time leading up to the Civil War was certainly one of those.
