Leading Ladies

February 6, 2017 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

I’m a big fan of Old Hollywood, due in large part to my father, and have read several books about the time period. Robert Wagner uses his decades long experience as an actor to tell brief anecdotes about the leading ladies of the silver screen. My biggest issue is the brevity of his anecdotes; most of the actresses get only a few paragraphs to have their story told. He starts in the 30s and makes his way to the 80s; his most detailed sections are in […]

“Every time we get a chance to get ahead, they move the finish line.”

I’m not a huge movie person honestly, but I am a huge Taraji P. Henson person so of course I went and saw Hidden Figures in theatres and freaking loved it. This is not a movie review site, so I won’t go into too much detail except to say that it was magical finding out about the histories of these smart-as-fuck women and it was a very entertaining way to spend a couple of hours. I really recommend seeing the movie and then reading the […]

The Doomsday Book

February 5, 2017 by BabyBearStrikesBack 3 Comments

Doomsday Book by Connie Willis This genre-bending story is a medical thriller, near-future time travel, and historical fiction novel all in one. Despite the subject matter, it’s a rather cozy novel; the kind you read while sipping tea on a rainy afternoon. While reading, I kept thinking that it had no right to be as good as it was because the overall story is rather thin: girl travels in time, professor tries to get her home. Well, maybe it’s a bit more complicated than that. […]

There is nothing wrong with being scared. It only means that something important is at stake

Spoiler warning! This is book two in a duology and it will be absolutely impossible for me to review this book without giving away some spoilers for book one, Of Metal and Wishes. Neither book stands well on its own, and they are clearly meant to be read as a whole. If you like going into books completely unspoiled, skip this review until you’ve finished book one. It’s been a year since the dramatic events that brought down the entire slaughterhouse where Wen and her […]

I’d miss pants too Therese

February 3, 2017 by Caitlin_D 3 Comments

I have a feeling this will be one of many Unmentionable reviews that grace the CBR9 blog thanks to badkittyuno’s wonderful review and Jenny Lawson’s endorsement of it on The Blogess. But here goes… Therese Oneil has dropped you in Victorian America (for the most part) with a decent amount of money and all your 21st Century knowledge; however you’re still (I guess, I mean guys can read this too) woman so it doesn’t matter how much you know because life is gonna suck but you get to […]

The Phantom of the Slaughterhouse doesn’t sing, but he does build creepy mechanical spiders

February 2, 2017 by Malin Leave a Comment

3.5 stars Wen, a young woman, whose family were clearly of a higher social status before her mother got sick and died, now works as a doctor’s apprentice for her father. Wen and her father are Itanyai. They both live in a large factory complex, Gochan One, treating to the workers of a large slaughterhouse. In the same larger compound, there is a factory producing textiles and one making advanced war machines, to further the military might of their country. Most of the workers at […]
