Good. Long, but good.

This is a very intense look into the really horrible ways that America has treated poor people — particularly white people — for centuries (and when I say “particularly white people”, I mean that’s the focus of the book — not that white people have been subjugated more than other races!). Like, starting with the colonies and running right up to last week. It’s a very, very long book, but if you like that sort of thing, it’s incredibly well done. I certainly learned a lot. […]

I shouldn’t know more than our culture’s leading experts…

While reading this, I found myself questioning beliefs I have held for many years. Not because this book presents novel ideas or is deeply informative about a subject I mistakenly thought I was familiar with (though it did represent what are to me novel ideas, and I am not overly familiar with this subject), but because its author’s views occupy the same space as mine, and he has fallen not only into controversy, but disfavor. Which, of course, makes me question how I see the […]

“Strength is knowing that everyone belongs to themselves.”

March 19, 2017 by yesknopemaybe 1 Comment

4.5 stars. I hate to say I sometimes judge books by their covers, but it’s the truth. It wasn’t until I saw the stunning UK cover that I really stopped and paid attention to this book everyone has raved about. No regrets! This was a stunning debut novel and absolutely worth a read. Homegoing is a generational tale that starts with two half sisters in the Gold Coast, Effia and Esi. One becomes the wife of a white slave trader and the other is sold […]

“In conclusion, women are just awful, and periods prove it.”

I wouldn’t have known about Unmentionable: The Victorian Lady’s Guide to Sex, Marriage and Manners if it hadn’t been for the reviews on this site, so a BIG thank you to all of the Cannonballers whose reviews placed it firmly on my radar, leading to much cackling and interruptions of my footie-watching boyfriend with a ‘Listen to this…’. Tackling all of the daily realities of Victorian ladies – an era that we’re visiting as relatively wealthy, European women so as to ensure things stay on […]

Shark Repellent Was Designed to Act as a Placebo

March 17, 2017 by faintingviolet Leave a Comment

The past few years I have been working slowly but surely through the works of Mary Roach. I find her style to be intoxicating, even if her subjects seem a little outside my own personal interests. When announced that her latest book would be about the science of war I was immediately wondering how her light-hearted and comedy heavy style would work with this subject. Once I realized that she was, as usual, going to focus on the weird eddies of science and discovery. In […]

War on Film

March 17, 2017 by jeverett15 4 Comments

Five Came Back is a look into the wartime experiences of five famous film-makers who took major hiatuses in the middle of their careers to lend their talents to the American war effort during World War II. While their contributions and their exposure to danger varied significantly, each of the five men, Frank Capra, John Ford, William Wyler, John Huston, and George Stevens made sacrifices and had experiences that would forever alter their films and their lives. It’s a compelling story, which may explain why […]
