Magical timepieces

November 24, 2017 by Mikki Blu Leave a Comment

This book is a mashup of mystery, magic, romance and historical fiction and I wanted to like it just based on that.  Despite that, it was rather lacking in romance and the magic was rather minimal. The heroine, India Steele, is reaching a point of desperation as the book begins.  Her father is recently deceased, and the man she was engaged to has snatched her inheritance out from under her.  Well, the shop had been left to the fiance, because of course a woman couldn’t […]

Dr. Silkstone, pioneering forensic detective

November 21, 2017 by Mikki Blu Leave a Comment

I came across the books of Tessa Harris at the library in my search for something new to read, and the description led me to believe the series would be along the same vein as the books by C.S. Harris.  This is actually book 2 in the Dr. Thomas Silkstone Mysteries, but I didn’t have much trouble picking up the thread of the series.  Dr. Silkstone is an American anatomist who traveled to 1780s London to study under one of the foremost surgeons there.  He […]

A Slight Disappointment

November 19, 2017 by TheShitWizard Leave a Comment

The British have apparently long been fascinated with crime and criminals, from the crowds that would gleefully gather to watch public executions hundreds of years ago right up to the Sunday night telly watcher, inhaling the latest series of Sherlock. In A Very British Murder, Lucy Worsley – she who’s also regularly on telly as one of its more engaging historians – looks at the British appetite for murders most foul, and how those appetites have affected and evolved our most popular forms of entertainment. […]

Fortune Favors the Wicked Benedict Frost is a celebrated lieutenant in the Royal Navy, but is forced to leave his naval career after an illness leaves him incapable of serving on a ship. He’s hoping to supplement his not very generous pension by having a book of his memoirs published, but that proves more difficult that he initially thought. He wants the money to provide a dowry for his younger sister, so when he hears that a large shipment of gold from the Royal Mint […]

Festive celebrations with the March family

November 16, 2017 by Mikki Blu Leave a Comment

After a year of marriage – and numerous adventures – Lady Julia and Brisbane hope for a quiet, intimate Christmas together – until they find themselves at her father’s ancestral estate, Bellmont Abbey, with her eccentric family and a menagerie of animals. Silent Night starts where Dark Enquiry left off, with Julia and Brisbane planning a trip to Italy.  This plan is scuttled, however, when they receive a letter from her father who reminds them that it’s the year to perform the Twelfth Night play […]
