Why, yes, I did Double Cannonball on a large book with tiny print that’s won lots of awards, why do you ask?

Stamped from the Beginning: The Definitive History of Racist Ideas in America by Ibram X. Kendi

December 19, 2017 by narfna 8 Comments

This book goes wide (not deep) on a very important topic, and should be required reading for everyone. That phrase gets thrown around a lot when talking about “important books”, but I’m seriously for serious here. Kendi has written THE comprehensive book about the history of racism in America, tracing it all the way from its roots in the 16th century through modern day, and he covers it from top to bottom, hitting on every major point you can probably think of along the way. It’s […]

Love is in the stars

Star Dust (2015) by Emma Barry and Genevieve Turner is another one of those romances I read that was good, but not one of my favorites. At this point, I can’t remember where I first heard of it or why I picked it up. My best guess is that it was free on Amazon Kindle (which it still is), and I decided to try it out. Star Dust is Book One of the Fly Me to the Moon series. Unfortunately, this first book did not suck me in […]

You get born, and you nurse on lies, and you get weaned on lies, and you learn fancier lies in school

December 16, 2017 by tillie 2 Comments

“Young folk […] they don’t know what to do with themselves.” A young man in the 1870’s drops out of Harvard and finds his way to Butcher’s crossing. He finds a reputable man who offers him a job managing the finances of the buffalo trade, but it’s not enough for Will Andrews. He tracks down a man named Miller who knows of a secret spot where there’s an untouched buffalo herd, ripe for the killing. All he needs is a little money. Andrews has that […]

The Original 8

December 13, 2017 by esme Leave a Comment

In 1948, the city of Atlanta hired its first 8 black police officers. They were not allowed to wear their uniforms to or from work, they could not arrest white people, they could not drive a squad car or operate out of the police headquarters. If they uncovered a crime, they reported that to white police officers, who would investigate it when, and if, they chose. Many in the black community viewed them with suspicion. Darktown is Thomas Mullen’s fictional interpretation of this endeavor. Historically, Henry Hooks, […]

Wilde Mania

December 13, 2017 by Mikki Blu Leave a Comment

This is the first in a new series by Eloisa James, The Wildes of Lindow Castle,  featuring here Lord Alaric Wilde who is the son of the Duke of Lindow.  He isn’t the heir to the title, that honor belongs to his elder brother North after the first son died unexpectedly.  Alaric has been out of the country for several years, traveling and exploring while writing about his adventures.  He’s completely unaware that his books have created a popular persona among the ton, and he’s […]

And they lived happily ever after

December 12, 2017 by Sophia Leave a Comment

Sometimes I crave romance novels. Whether it’s because I’ve read too much serious literature and non-fiction or I just need the escapism, the best thing to do is curl up with a romantic novel as soon as possible. I’m pretty sure that’s what happened with Midnight Angel (1995) by Lisa Kleypas. Feeling the need for some romantic distraction, I got on the library website, looked up Lisa Kleypas–because she’s a good, reliable author–and picked a book that was available. Tasia, a young Russian heiress. is about to […]
