Playing end of the year catch up

December 29, 2017 by badkittyuno 1 Comment

Okay, I’m 25 reviews behind guys. I’m going to finish them here, and then be done with CBR I think. I absolutely love this community, and will probably keep logging on to read y’all’s awesome reviews, but trying to keep up with my own has felt increasingly like an obligation, not like a fun expansion of my love of reading. But I’ve read some great books this month, so here’s one last blast of recommendations… The Blood of Emmett Till by Timothy B. Tyson (3 stars) […]

A provocative exploration of church denominational issues

December 28, 2017 by bonnie Leave a Comment

L chose a denomination-specific book for her pick in December in my friends’ book club. For those of you not in the know, I am a Seventh-day Adventist, which is a Protestant faith based in the Millerite movement of the 1830s and 40s. We are categorized as Evangelical rather than Fundamentalist, though we as an organization officially maintain a steady political neutrality (though there are certainly plenty within my local congregation who drink deeply of the Trumpian well, to my immense disappointment). George Knight is […]

The last hellion weds

December 28, 2017 by Mikki Blu Leave a Comment

This is the fifth and final book in the Hellions of Halstead Hall series, and it’s the story of Celia Sharpe who is the last member of her family to be wed.  As per her grandmother’s edict, Celia and her siblings were to be married in order to gain their inheritance and she is the last holdout.  Their parents had died rather mysteriously years earlier, and Celia had become a hoyden who preferred riding and hunting with her brothers than any more feminine pursuits.  However, […]

Disgraceful Duke weds Runaway Bride in Scandalous Affair

December 27, 2017 by Mikki Blu Leave a Comment

Hurray for a new Loretta Chase book!  This is the first book in her new series Difficult Dukes, about a trio of friends and dukes known as Their Dis-Graces for their rakish activities.  Hugh Ancaster is the seventh Duke of Ripley, and his friend the Duke of Ashmont is about to marry Olympia Hightower, pressing Hugh into service as his groomsman.  Unfortunately, Olympia isn’t sure she wants to marry Ashmont and after a couple of shots of brandy, decides to make a getaway through the […]

Revisiting a true favourite at Christmas time

December 27, 2017 by Malin 4 Comments

When Lydia Charingford was fifteen, she was seduced and ruined by an older man. She got pregnant, and it was only through the quick wits of her friend Minnie and the support of her family that not everyone in polite society found out about it. Lydia lost the baby, and tries very hard not to dwell on that part of her past. When Dr Jonas Grantham (the junior doctor present when she was being examined and her shame was exposed to her parents) returns to […]

Tom Taylor’s journey comes to an end

December 27, 2017 by Malin 1 Comment

Tom Taylor is trying to find his way back to his friends, moving through a number of children’s stories. Even when he’s reunited with his storyteller father, Wilson Taylor, who by writing a popular fantasy series where the main character shared Tom’s name, pretty much gave him the abilities to move through all manner of works of fiction, and his friends, the world is in chaos, as the Leviathan, the source of all the stories in the world, is gravely wounded. The boundaries between stories […]
