A slow burn romance that is worth the wait

January 15, 2018 by Mikki Blu 6 Comments

I’ve read a lot of historical romance over the years, and this book was so much more than I was expecting!  It’s not the typical tale, and maybe the romance doesn’t fit the mold of the traditional genre but I devoured this in very short order and wanted more.  Thank you narfna for your wonderful reviews of this series that prompted me to pick this up. This is book one in the Blackshear family saga, and tells the tale of Martha Russell, who is newly […]

Better Than Being There

January 14, 2018 by slowseptember 2 Comments

The number one thing I learned from How To Be A Tudor, by charming and intelligent historian Ruth Goodman, is that I’m glad I’m not a Tudor.

Gradient on a curve

January 13, 2018 by octothorp Leave a Comment

First off, this book is beautiful.  Each chapter deals with the history of varying hues within a color family, and each page is bordered by that color.  This is helpful not only for context and avoids bogging the reader down with descriptions of exactly where magenta falls on a scale of fuchsia to pink, but also just LOOKS really cool.  From a purely aesthetic standpoint, the book looks great. The premise was enough to hook me easily as well; the histories of specific shades of […]

Traitors, Talents, and Spies

January 13, 2018 by Dome'Loki Leave a Comment

After finishing the disappointing Half a War I was scanning my shelves and the spine of this book, emblazoned with the flag of Great Britain, jumped out at me.  At the Table of Wolves by Kay Kenyon.  The cover has a WWII militaristic look, with the tagline “Traitors, Talents, Spies:  Let the games begin”.  It had been the speculative fiction pick of the month last year at my favorite bookstore.  I knew nothing about it but the store’s recommendation was enough for me. Kay Kenyon has reimagined a post […]

Army Chief of Staff Reading List #3

January 12, 2018 by thewheelbarrow 3 Comments

I read The First World War by Hew Strachan mostly because it was recommended by the Army Chief of Staff.  I also realized that my knowledge of WWI is woefully inept considering I have a history degree.  I took a class on World War II and the US Civil War.  There are dozens of movies about WWII and the Civil War.  We joke about the days in which the History Channel showed only profiles of Hitler, as opposed to Ancient Aliens, as a sign of […]

I Was the Wrong Audience for this Book

January 11, 2018 by Ale 4 Comments

One of my colleagues asked me to read this book along with him to help him prepare a presentation for his religions and sociology course, and I wanted to like it, for his sake and my own, but I was hands-down the absolute worst audience for this book. This is a volume for someone who’s coming in with no prior knowledge, or knows a little bit about a lot of different religions. I unfortunately know an iceberg’s worth of information on my own religion, and […]
