In the last part of His Majesty’s Dragon, Temeraire and Laurence realize that Temeraire is a not only a Chinese dragon as they already knew but a Celestial, a breed reserved for the Imperial family. After Temeraire discovers his special power, divine wind, in a battle with the French, the rest of the world knows it, too, and the second novel begins after the Chinese delegation’s arrival to determine what is to be done about Laurence and Temeraire. The group even includes the emperor’s brother, […]
Here There Be Dragons
Last December, I ended up checking out Uprooted by Naomi Novik which had an adult fairy tale vibe (I think TyburnBlossom shared a link to it on Facebook?). Curious to see what else she had written, I was surprised to see she had a nine book series about dragons during the Napoleonic Wars. Alternate historical fiction fantasy definitely was not what I was expecting to find in her back catalog, but when I needed a break from the large non fiction tomb I am reading […]
Hunger Games in Nazi Germany
“These were the names she whispered in the dark. These were the pieces she brought back into place. These were the wolves she rode to war.” I’ve read a lot of books set in and around WW2 but this one draws you by asking one big question- What if the Allies lost? I suppose this is the YA version of The Man in the High Castle but I kept falling asleep during the first season on Amazon (most of my TV watching is late at night) so […]
omg
I completely adored Aslan’s last book, Zealot, which examined the historical evidence we have for what Jesus of Nazareth, the historical Jesus, would have been like when you strip away all the modern beliefs and assumptions. It was incredibly fascinating and Aslan took us through the evidence piece by piece, drawing conclusions or best guesses along the way. Although I enjoyed God, it definitely wasn’t what I was expecting. I was expecting the same measured look at historical evidence and then conclusions drawn from that […]
Seventh in the Series, One of the Best.
Cannonball Read Book #4! It’s taken me almost a week to write this because honestly, what is there to say? Here’s my honest review: “It’s Outlander. If you’ve read the first six? Keep going. If you haven’t? Don’t start here.” Hard to stretch that out over 250 words though, so here’s some random… My review reminds me of Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed… (Stay with me…) My husband and I used to listen religiously to Doug Loves Movies. (We still listen sometimes on road trips, but […]
The Noisy Paint Box: The Colors and Sounds of Kandinsky’s Abstract Art
When a proper Russian boy is given a box of paints from his aunt magic occurs. From a young age (and well into adulthood) Kandisnky did what was expected of him. But when colors sing out and music paints a picture, you must follow your heart and create art! This is a quick introduction into the life of an abstract painter. An afterwards gives more detail. The illustrations are powerful and capture the text and the work of Kandinsky perfectly. First: my take on the […]
