Recently a coworker asked us to send some of our favorite Banned and Challenged book titles and a little snippet about it and/or why we love it. I emailed her back and said did she want them alphabetically, order of importance or just my favorite? How did I approach it? I thought, send a few favorite author(s), but that was too many. Just every book I read that has been B-and/or-C? Way too many to do. Therefore I said “Make it simple.” And found a […]

How the Word is Passed: A Reckoning with the History of Slavery Across America by Clint Smith
Bingo: Diaspora. This book about American slavery ties to the African diaspora that occurred due to the transatlantic slave trade. The history of slavery is the history of the United States. It was not peripheral to our founding; it was central to it. It is not irrelevant to our contemporary society; it created it. The history is in our soil, it is in our policies, and it must, too, be in our memories.” Clint Smith’s How the Word is Passed: A Reckoning with the History […]
“…he was one of the happiest men who had ever lived — happy in his family, his home, his books, his work, his garden, his travels, and the world of nature and people around him.”
Harold Nicolson: A Biography (Volume II: 1930-1968) by James Lees-Milne
This second volume of James Lees-Milne’s biography of Harold Nicolson covers 1930-1968. With the large amount of world and personal history that this book covers, JLM continues to masterfully shepherd the reader through Nicolson’s fascinating life. I enjoyed this volume more than the first one (although they are both excellent) mainly because with him leaving the Foreign Office, the foreign policy explanations die down a bit and I am more well versed in the history of this era. While the Paris Conference and the Lausanne […]
Returning Fairytales to Their Roots – Stories that are NOT for Kids
F*cked Up Fairy Tales by Liz Gotauco
When Liz Gotauco (aka cosbrarian) announced last year that her F*cked Up Fairytales with Liz video series was coming to us in book form, I got very excited. When the arc showed up on NetGalley, I smashed the request button hard. When the e-arc showed up on my kindle, I started to read it very slowly, because in 2025, joy should be savored. F*cked Up Fairytales: Sinful Cinderellas, Prince Alarmings and Other Timeless Classics is everything I hoped it would be. F*cked Up Fairy Tales […]
“Fellas, let’s go” Well, not exactly the St. Crispin’s Day speech, was it?
Henry V: The Astonishing Triumph of England's Greatest Warrior King by Dan Jones
When Dan Jones was writing his books on The Plantagenets and the Wars of the Roses, he left a Henry V-sized gap, as he knew he wanted to devote an entire book to the man; this is that book. Starting from his birth in 1386 and ending with his death in 1422 at the age of 35, the book is divided in half; first Henry as Prince (actually first as lord’s son), then Henry as King. Covering his entire life, Jones doesn’t just hit the […]
Dead gods, decapitated corpses and dastardly ex-husbands
Paladin's Grace by T. Kingfisher
CBR17 Bingo: Purple (most of the cover, barring the cover image, is a lovely lavender purple) Stephen is one of the paladins of the Saint of Steel (who was a god, despite the name), who died very suddenly and unexpectedly a few years back. No one thought gods could die, and a lot of his paladins killed themselves and caused massive amounts of damage when it happened. Now, Stephen and the six other paladins who remain are housed at the Temple of the White Rat […]
