The Wild Ones

Snow Foal by Susanna Bailey

March 1, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I would have enjoyed Susanna Bailey’s Snow Foal a lot when I was about ages 10 to 14. I would have liked the free spirit of the main character, how she struggles to be independent, how she needs to go home, and how she learns home can be where the heart is, even if it does not always include all the people you love. As an adult, I still appreciated most things, but sometimes Addie’s attitude left  little something to be desired. The other characters […]

Writing for you and me and herself

Huda F Are You? by Huda Fahmy

February 28, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I have not read a lot of Huda Fahmy’s works, but what I do know is that they are an important voice in today’s literary world. Not because she is a woman or because she is Muslim, but because she is someone who is writing about experiences we all face.  I picked up Huda F Are You? (by the way, her mother hates the title) because I found an autographed copy. And while I thought Fahmy would focus more on her religious relationship, the story […]

Outside of their comfort zone

Haru: Book 1: Spring by Joe Latham

February 9, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Haru: Book 1: Spring by Joe Latham is a fantasy story with the fantasy elements of adventure. There is a ghost mother, a cursed artifact, and magical and magical-like situations. We also have a coming of age aspect with the bullying Haru faces at school. Then there is the character The Dark. It is creepy AF. But also, due to the way Latham has created it, it can be seductive, or at least is (pick one or all that fit), beautiful, romantic, dark, scary, creepy, […]

War makes Hell look cozy

The Horizon Volume One by jh

February 9, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I was cleaning up old online reader copy links the other day and I said, “Self, let’s try The Horizon Volume one.” So, I did (though it is currently available).  Of course, I did not realize it was volume one (I have a habit of doing that) and just thought it was around 300 pages of a dystopian artistic graphic novel. And it was. Only the ending has a cliffhanger ending that made me say, “WHAT THE FLAMING MONKEY TOOTS??”  How did that happen? I […]

Look Up!: Fontaine the Pigeon Starts a Revolution by Britt Condolfi

February 9, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Recently I located the publisher Paw Prints Publishing and they sent me a copy of a title that is due in March 2024. This is not a review of that book, but a review of a picture book due in late April-early May 2024. First, I would like to point out it is never a good idea to look up when birds are around, but Fontaine the Pigeon Revolutionary does not care if you look up or down, he’s going to do that thing birds […]

Darkest moments and hope

Finding the Light: A Mother's Journey from Trauma to Healing  by Marian Henley

February 1, 2024 by BlackRaven 2 Comments

I received an email a few days ago, with eight online reader links to books coming out from March 2024 to May 2024. One of those titles was Finding the Light: A Mother’s Journey from Trauma to Healing by Marian Henley. At first I thought it was another older title, as the covers were similar, but then I noticed it was not due early March 2024. Now, I have said my reading for 2024 is to be fun, well there really is nothing fun about this love letter to […]
