This is a wonderful short little book. I picked it up because Goodreads recommended it based on my reading history, and I’m glad I did. Wolf Pascoe is the pen name of an anesthesiologist (and blogger). In these 102 pages, he basically muses about his job. Anaesthesia has a long history, starting with Ondine of Greek mythology, but a relatively short modern history, starting in the 1840s with the use of ether. Pascoe starts with that and from there intertwines his poetic and philosophical musings with more concrete discussion (although […]
Equally interesting questions and answers
The Reason I Jump was written by a 13 year old Japanese boy with autism. David Mitchell, author of Cloud Atlas and Black Swan Green, has a son with autism, and as he explains in the forward to this book, the first thing a parent does when their child has been diagnosed with autism is, research the hell out of it. While most things written about autism come from either the parents of affected children or doctors, Mitchell stumbled across this first hand account by Naoki Higashida, and had […]
Down Size
I rarely read non-fiction, but when I do it tends to be health/fitness related type. I’m always interested to see what new ways I can make myself healthy. I pick and choose the advice and ideas that I believe work best for me. I’m not into major workout or dietary changes. Down Size by Ted Spiker was in my library’s “New Book” section so I thought I’d give it a try. Dr. Oz wrote the introduction, and I like his ideas on healthy eating. And […]
Another Pregnancy Book I Would Actually Buy for Someone
If I had to summarize this book in one word, it would be “reassuring.” This is a book written by three OB/GYNs who are also moms. It gives a general but helpful overview of what to expect in each of the three trimester and the “fourth trimester” until baby is 3 months old. There are frequent anecdotes from both their practice and their own pregnancy experiences that help ground their advice and keep it interesting and real. Each of the authors had their own challenges with pregnancy […]
Expecting Better than “What to Expect…”
Well, I just got back from my first real ultrasound and now the internet/world knows that we’re expecting a little Fiat.Luxury Jr. in 6 months! So naturally, I’ve been reading–and hate-reading–a lot of pregnancy books. There are a lot of pregnancy books out there, you guys. And a lot of them are condescending, fear-mongering, and almost useless. I won’t be reviewing all of them because I have other, better books that I want to review, but anyone who’s ever picked up a pregnancy book will be […]
Every Nurse Has a Poop Story or 12
This is not a book for everyone to read and enjoy. I mean, you can still pick it up and peruse even if you aren’t, were, or are going to become a nurse because you’re a grown-ass adult who can make his or her own decisions and who the fuck am I to tell you what to do? You might not really get as much out of it as someone who does have some investment in the nursing field, though. This book goes from time […]
