File this one under, “Be grateful for what you have”. Anna Lyndsey’s memoir about her sensitivity to light, which has resulted in her near-constant need to remain in the dark, is beautifully written, and alternates between darkly humorous, and downright tragic. “Most of the time, I do not want to die. But I would like to have the means of death within my grasp. I want to feel the luxury of choice, to know the answer to “How do I bear this?” need not always […]
Trying to Drown Out the World
So that was pretty good. A little more self help-y than I was expecting even with all that the title might imply. Drs. Bacon and Aphramor are interested in making sure that we all are aware of the actual science around health as it relates to weight. Not the ridiculous idea that you can tell someone’s health by their weight, but the truth: that health is complex and certainly can’t be reduced to the number on the scale. Plenty of very thin people are extremely […]
Do not try to sing the title to the tune of “The Circle of Life”
It’s weird, sometimes, how much other people’s stories can mean to you. It’s part of the reason I love reading (good) memoirs – coming across that one story, that one line in their tale, that hits you right in the heart, or the head, or rings some distant memory bell of your own. The thing that makes you see that people – with all their infinite indiviualities – still have so many little points of connection. And that’s how I felt reading The Story of […]
Do you have a baby? Then you don’t have time to read this book.
Many (like, at least five!) friends who are also Parents of Babies recommended this book to me when they learned of my delicate condition: “This book is the only one that actually helped!” So obviously I picked it up. Baby Luxury is still in utero, so I’ll have to report back in December when I can tell y’all if the advice in this book works on an actual baby. Basically, Dr. Karp posits that particularly fussy (colicky) babies simply don’t have the skills yet to self-soothe. […]
More Food Stuff
Wait, didn’t I just review this book? Nope. So just this week, the “It Starts with Food” authors released a slightly more and slightly less comprehensive guide to their elimination diet program. In this section they have less detail than their previous book, but they make for it with a fairly intensive FAQ section. And then, the best part … Cookbook! I am not a cook. I’m a baker, which really just means that I like sweets so much I want an excuse to eat […]
I Mean, Yeah. It Probably Does
Okay, so (as discussed on my review of Dr. Perlmutter’s book), I’m trying to sort out the food that is going to make me healthy. I know it isn’t sugar (I type, having finished some delicious chocolate ice cream), although man, if I could thrive on pasta and chocolate cake, I’d be a happy, happy lady. But we all know that isn’t the case. I’ve got a good friend who has followed this elimination diet and had some pretty fantastic outcomes. I picked up the […]
