Susannah Cahalan’s memoir, Brain on Fire, went on my To Read List immediately following a review I read here on CBR7. A junior reporter for the Post begins having personality changes, mood swings and forgetfulness- symptoms she blames of having a cold, or the flu. When her symptoms persist she calls her gynecologist; she recently changed her birth control and is hoping what she is experiencing is related. She gets an MRI but there isn’t anything abnormal in her test results, however she returns to […]
This book gave me hives
Kimberly Rae Miller and I could NOT have had more different childhoods. I have a neat freak mother who instilled in me a fear of clutter and mess at a young age. OCD runs through my family, and while I have a lot of minor tendencies towards it, I have an aunt who’s house is spotless as a result of her brain not allowing her to stop cleaning. When I get anxious or angry, I clean or throw things away. It’s the best way for me […]
A Running Guide for the Rest of Us
Being an amateur runner I’m always on the lookout for ways to improve my routine, different ideas for keeping running “fun”, and finding motivation to keep at it. With a title like, Get Off Your Ass and Run!, Ruth Field definitely catches your eye. And her style of writing is very blunt, which is good when you’re trying to motivate people to leave the couch and run for 45 minutes. Apparently she has a well-known blog, The Grit Doctor, where she gives blunt advice on […]
So What Do I Eat?
Last year I read Clean by Dr. Alejandro Junger. Recently, Dr. Junger has added another element to his ideas on diet and healthy living and that relates to the gut. Clean Gut focuses on the digestive track itself and how certain foods affect the digestive track. Special focus is given to probiotics and foods that contribute to the intestinal flora’s good health. While I don’t disagree with Dr. Junger, I feel like his diet recommendations for Clean Gut are a bit extreme. He wants individuals […]
It’s Getting Hot in Here. No, Seriously. It’s Really Hot.
When you think about disasters that caused a whole bunch of deaths in one swoop in the US in the last 25 or 30 years (outside of a war), you probably think about the September 11 attacks, which killed 2,977 in the US. If I were to ask you what the next biggest disaster in terms of deaths, you’d probably also get it right: Hurricane Katrina and its 1,833 deaths. But do you know what caused the third greatest number of deaths in the past […]
Hands Down, a Top 5 For Me This Year
This was easily one of the best books I’ve read, especially in the last year or two. It aims at a very specific type of reader, but if you like non-fiction medical stuff, technical and occasionally gory, with a sense of humor — then try it. If you like Mary Roach, particularly Gulp — try this. The writing style and subject reminded me a lot of her work. “Mine is a gruesome job, but for a scientist with a love for the mechanics of the human body, […]
