Cannonballing With My Favorite Genre: Medical Memoir (CBR10 BINGO)

September 6, 2018 by ASKReviews 6 Comments

CBR 10 BINGO Square: Backlog (Added this to my TBR list on February 12, 2013 – the day I joined Goodreads, apparently) Best for: People who enjoy good writing about medical issues. NOT for those who get squeamish reading about surgical procedures. In a nutshell: Surgeon Atul Gawande (you probably know him from Being Mortal; I think my favorite of his is the Checklist Manifesto) shares stories about his time as a surgeon, exploring the reality that surgeons are humans and make mistakes. Worth quoting: […]

When the illustrations for the article make you decide you have to read the book.

August 21, 2018 by Mrs Smith Reads 1 Comment

Sometime in 2016 I found a list of best long-form reporting stories of the past year. Deep into the list, I clicked on this story from ProPublica and The Marshall Project, about a young woman who reported being repeatedly raped over many hours by a masked man, in her apartment, and the nightmare scenario which unfolded as she was accused of making a false report, then arrested and forced to go before a judge to plead guilty for her “crime.” The story was embedded into my memory for […]

How to sit when you poo and other important questions.

August 10, 2018 by Mrs Smith Reads 1 Comment

Do you ever lie awake at night and wonder what’s going on inside your stomach? Do you examine your poo before you flush? Do you know what tonsil stones are? Well, if you’re curious about any of the above, you should read Gut by Giulia Enders, because not only does she have answers, she also has a cheeky way of explaining how some parts of our bodies work that most of us just choose to ignore, because…. eeewwwwww. I made a conscious decision to stop reading *diet* […]

Sex Ed for the Elementary School Set

August 6, 2018 by LanierHgts 2 Comments

I decided to review this book because I needed something from the banned or challenged list (for #cbr10bingo), and was amazed (or not) to find this one on the list.  I only recently read this with my 11 year old son, so thought a review might be helpful to other parents. I am admittedly not an expert on sex ed books for kids.  But I decided to buy this book upon some recommendation or other from a trusted source.  Ever prepared, I have had the […]

I underlined so many things in this book. In pen. Pink pen.

So I feel a lot of ways about this book, which is basically the opposite of the premise of the book, but what are you going to do? To begin with, I think the authors’ stated premise of the book is both valiant and worthwhile: “to turn your bullshit wish into a goal that can actually be achieved.” That sounds good, right?  Sounds… so much better than endlessly trying to figure out why a thing is happening, or how you can prevent bad things from […]

Backlog #CBRBingo

August 1, 2018 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

According to Goodreads I shelved When Breath Becomes Air on December 6, 2016 so it is a pretty clear choice for the Backlog bingo square. “What makes life meaningful enough to go on living?” Paul Kalanithi was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer at the age of thirty-six just as he was completing his decade’s long training to be a neurosurgeon. He had felt for months he may have cancer but put off getting any scans done until his back pain became unbearable. Paul had […]
