The UK Government Failed In Its COVID Response

Duty of Care: One NHS Doctor’s Story of the COVID-19 Crisis by Dr Dominic Pimenta

November 28, 2020 by ASKReviews Leave a Comment

Best for: Those looking for some insight into the pandemic from the perspective of a health care worker. In a nutshell: Dr Dominic Pimenta, a cardiac registrar, tells the story of his experience working in hospital during the first wave of the COVID-19 Pandemic while starting up the HEROES charity to support healthcare workers. Worth quoting: N/A (Audio book) Why I chose it: I’ve followed Dr Pimenta on Twitter, and he’s shared some strong words about the UK Government’s failures during this response. Plus, as […]

How to be Ace? Anyway you want to!

How to Be Ace: A Memoir of Growing Up Asexual by Rebecca Burgess

November 4, 2020 by BlackRaven 2 Comments

I am not sure what I expected from How to Be Ace: A Memoir of Growing Up Asexual by Rebecca Burgess, but this was not it. There is some repetition with the authors feeling and actions (they mention more than once that they “might grow into wanting to have sex” or “it’s something that once happens will feel right.”  They also repeat saying how it is uncomfortable with touching people/being touched and repeated mentions of their social anxiety. I think I was looking for more of […]

“The practice of yoga teaches us to live fully.”

Light on Life: The Yoga Journey to Wholeness, Inner Peace, and Ultimate Freedom by B.K.S. Iyengar

November 3, 2020 by Halbs Leave a Comment

Iyengar is something of an ambassador of yoga. Even though he has died, he continues to educate and influence those curious about yoga’s practice and precepts. Personally, I first started reading Iyengar because he was on the reading list of Yoga with Adriene’s Adriene Mishler. The Tree of Yoga is the short and nourishing title on Adriene’s list, and that was the first one I read. This book is longer (around 300 pages) and still dense. However, while other books may be better introductions to […]

And that was the last healthcare folly the USA ever embarked upon (CBR12Bingo 2: Yellow)

Teeth by Mary Otto

October 15, 2020 by octothorp Leave a Comment

What a freaking outrage. This book puts the “yell” in “yellow.” Deamonte Driver was twelve years old when he died of an abscessed tooth. His brother had a far worse-appearing tooth, and his mother was struggling to find a dentist who accepted their medicaid, and in the interim Deamonte’s tooth quietly worsened, until he became septic and comatose. Deamonte rebounded, but then died unexpectedly shortly after his discharge, all for a decayed tooth that would have cost eighty dollars dollars to repair. This happened in […]

Everyone is Doing Their Bit in Their Own Way

Bisexual Unicorn Vampires Teach Me the Importance of the Vampire Cough by Chuck Tingle

October 11, 2020 by LittlePlat 3 Comments

Well, I don’t think I could have picked a more tonally different read for my No Money review than my Money one. Chuck Tingle is famous for his eclectic romance shorts between people and exotic cryptic species, people and inanimate objects, and even people and abstract concepts. Recently, he has been inundated with requests for Coronavirus related erotica — which he has refused to do, on the grounds that he doesn’t want to write about things or events that are harming people. So instead, Chuck […]

I (sometimes) like cute stories and I cannot lie

Malina's Jam: Walt Disney Animation Studios Artist Showcase by Svetla Radivoeva

Mindfulness at the Park by Teresa Anne Power

September 9, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I like cute stories but I do not always want cute stories. Yet, when I am in the mood, well, I’m in the mood! And if you’re in the mood for cute stories try one of these: Malina’s Jam: Walt Disney Animation Studios Artist Showcase by Svetla Radivoeva is a cute story, but one we have seen before. However, the illustrations are delightful and worth the read. I can see a series of books about Malina and friends. Malina is a sweet, shy hedgehog who […]
