If You’re a kid or adult like Gavin

If You’re a Kid Like Gavin by Gavin Grimm and Kyle Lukoff

January 24, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

If You’re a Kid Like Gavin things are not as easy as you might like them. You need to deal with gossip, bullying and having to tell your parents that they thought you were a girl, but you are really a boy and the name given at birth does not fit. You are a trans kid who at first, seemed to be okay at school, being themselves, then things took a turn. I like how Gavin Grimm and Kyle Lukoff presented this memoir. The story […]

Not a bad ending but a little uneven with the science and the story

Cells at Work! vol. 6 by Akane Shimizu

January 22, 2022 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

There’s seems to have been some drama behind the scenes before Cells at Work! Vol. 6 came out; a few years ago (pre-pandemic I think) it was listed for pre-order then disappeared. Now, it’s out as the final volume of the original series that’s now got a few spin-offs and an animation. Overall, the basic premise of real biology science presented through manga/anime tropes is still here and fun, although maybe worn a touch thin in places. This volume feels a bit more episodic than […]

You can’t guarantee your own happiness but you can stack the odds in your favour

The Blue Zones of Happiness: Lessons from the World's Happiest People by Dan Buettner

January 20, 2022 by kniki Leave a Comment

This well researched book shares the secrets behind the happiest places to live in the world and strategies for us all to add to our pleasure, purpose and pride – the 3 pillars of happiness. There are plenty of lessons for politicians on designing happy communities, as well as for individuals on what you can do in your community, family life and inner life to stack the odds of achieving happiness in your favour. It seems the trick is to set up your environment so […]

Too Bright To Hear Too Loud To See by Juliann Garey

January 19, 2022 by Claudia 2 Comments

I always struggle with even rating books that are made more for being sad and discussing something difficult. Since I view reading as a form of entertainment its hard to rate pain as a kind of enjoyment. Juliann Garey takes us into the life and mind of Greyson Todd, a Hollywood studio exec with a wife and daughter whose life seems perfect except for the fact that Greyson has Bipolar 1 disorder. I went into this book completely blind, not knowing what it was about […]

Looking for an “unrealistic YA rom-com where the fat girl gets the guy?” Well, it might be more realistic than you think.

Big Boned by Jo Watson

January 17, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I started Big Boned by Jo Watson sometime last fall. And it took me this long not because it was bad, the opposite actually, but I was only reading at lunch, was not reading every day and it just got away from me.  This weekend I had a few hours with nothing bothering me expect my friend’s cat occasionally giving me the stink eye as I was not petting him and sitting in his spot. What started off as a funny-without-be-lol-funny book would have its […]

Old fashion feel to a book of today

Sweeping Up the Heart by Kevin Henkes

January 17, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Sweeping Up the Heart is a cute little book by Kevin Henkes. Known mostly for his picture books, he has created some lovely middle reader novels. However, the adult reader will realize that they have seen the subject, the message, before. This is not fresh, but for the aged 8 to 10 (or even up to a younger 12) it is a nice story of change and friendship. The subject centers around loss (via death and divorce), friendships (new and old), family, and love. Our […]
