And you thought your upbringing was odd

Occulted by Amy Rose

December 5, 2022 by BlackRaven 4 Comments

I will start off with that I read Occulted on Edelweiss reader copy as it is due in May 2023. I also will say it ended abruptly, and I am wondering if there will be more to it in the final edition or a part two. This edition is heavily focused on the highlights of Amy Rose’s life as a young girl ending on note that could mean sequels are possible. I will now say I think Amy Rose and I would have been friends […]

Trains, Santa, and more

ThunderBoom by Jack Briglio

November 29, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

ThunderBoom by Jack Briglio is a graphic novel about 11-year-old Logan and the adventures he has in his imagination. Which seems normal enough, but Logan’s neurodivergence creates a take on life that makes his relationship to the world and his family and the people around him, hard on him. And hard on his family, too. The nice part of the story is the realism of his parents. They are both overprotected and concerned, but also allow Logan to dominate his environment. It has a modern […]

War can make anyone a refugee.

Hakim's Odyssey: Book 1: From Syria to Turkey by Fabien Toulmé

November 29, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Hakim’s Odyssey: Book 1: From Syria to Turkey by Fabien Toulmé, and translated by Hannah Chute, is a straight forward and complicated read. This is not the usual refugee/displaced person story that we think we know. Usually, we are watching them on boats, trying to escape whatever the tragic events are in their homeland. This time, in the (as close as humanly possible) words of one refugee, the “before that” is told. From Syria to Turkey, Hakim’s story unfolds, and while no two stories are alike, […]

What a Mother

Tales of Great Goddesses: Gaia: Goddess of Earth by Imogen Greenberg

November 29, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Tales of Great Goddesses: Gaia: Goddess of Earth by Imogen Greenberg and Isabel Greenberg on the illustrations is a picture book graphic novel that shows how the “Sisterhood fights the Drums of Chaos” (their words not mine). Or in other words, it is a modern take on the Greek mythology with a pro-female look. Gaia is the Earth and the Mother of All. She created the world, and she ruled the land and Earth, while her husband the sky. And then the trouble starts. From here […]

Catwoman: Soulstealer Graphic novel by Louise Simonson

November 29, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The graphic novel adaptation of Catwoman: Soulstealer confused me at first. There are several of the Batman villains but no Batman. There are the people we know, such as Lucius Fox and Commissioner Gordan but not really “there” just “Oh yeah by the way…” And though she is a villain that we all know and love (or hate) Catwoman is the new gal in town, with Poison Ivy and Harley already established. We have Luke Fox as Batwing (yeah, I’m with Selina Kyle/Catwoman, what’s up […]
