Just like Aunt Bea

Zora, the Story Keeper by Ebony Joy Wilkins

March 8, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I read a book. I thought about it so I could write a review. And then I wondered, is this something I can do justice to? I mean, there is nothing hard about Zora, the Story Keeper. It is a story about a girl, Zora, and her beloved Aunt Bea. And in the end, after their beautiful times together, where they told stories, and costumes are worn, Aunt Bea passes away, so it is also a book of grief and holding onto the stories Aunt […]

There he was, minding his own business, thinking he was as good as everyone else, never realizing he was committing the crime of being Fat.

A Work in Progress. by Jarrett Lerner

March 8, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

WOW. WOW. WOW. (Did I say WOW?)  The one thing you need to know about this book is Wow. The rest is gravy. Which is, this is a story about body image and is told in a familiar manner. But this time it is told from the point of view of a boy instead of a girl like we are used to. I have had Jarrett Lerner books ruined for me because of A Work in Progress. I will never be able to read them […]

Lust and love

The Song of Aglaia by Anne Simon

March 7, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Possibly the most unsettling fairy tale you’ll read all year, The Song of Aglaia is as feminist as it is iconoclastic. Simon’s scritch-scratch textures and kids’-book-gone-awry character designs provide a perfect vehicle for her exploration of the ways lust and — more upsettingly — love destroy our ideals.– “Vulture”      CBR15Passport  Other country (from France) Having had read the Anne Simon trilogy out of order (book three first, now book one The Song of Aglaia) book three makes more sense. In three we see the son […]

The mantle of Moth Keeper

The Moth Keeper by K O' Neill

March 7, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

CBR15Passport Other Country K O’Neill’s graphic novel The Moth Keeper first and foremost has gorgeous illustrations as you usually find in their works.  And it has a terribly sweet story. However, due to lack of text, sometimes things are not as “fleshed out” as they could be, making much open to interpretation for the reader. Yet, if you pay attention to things that do not seem important at first, and take your time reading (not to mention be comfortable and do not have many distractions) […]

Trust My Gut

How to Do The Work: Reconise Your Patters, Heal from you Past, and Create Your Self by Dr Nicole LePera

March 5, 2023 by ASKReviews Leave a Comment

Best for: People who are already working with a therapist, as that therapist can point out which parts of the book are useful and which are … super not. In a nutshell: Instagram influencer psychologist Dr LePera offers her suggestions on how to work through issues Worth quoting: I underlined a lot, but I don’t think there’s anything worth sharing. Why I chose it: There’s an area I’m working on in therapy and I asked my therapist for a book recommendation. She suggested this one. […]

Born to Run 2: The Ultimate Training Guide by Christopher McDugall, Eric Orton

March 4, 2023 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I got Born to Run 2 on sale on a whim and I’m glad I didn’t pay full price. This book gets judgey and inflexible; it does have some good looking recommendations for individual activities for training, and recipes for long run pre/post/mid run nutrition. The book is a running guide book and it’s set up to follow a core group of people who run and their journeys to find a way to do so that works (naturally it’s the trainers who wrote/inspired the book’s). […]
