The girl who won’t quit

Asadora! V06 by Naoki Urasawa

April 5, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

CBR15Passport country (Japan)   Manga and I have an interesting relationship. I appreciate it, and it does its own thing. But occasionally that thing has me going along for the ride.  And the series by Naoki Urasawa, Asadora! has me riding (so far) all six volumes. (This volume is translated by John Werry) While slower than the others, this is a good build-up for volume 7 (planned for October 2023). And while these “in-between novels” are a nice way to give you more information about […]

Suzanne: The Jazz Age Goddess of Tennis by Tom Humberstone

April 5, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

CBR15Passport Own While I was on a short vacation, I finished a fictional novel of a little-known black dancer of the 1840s, William Henry Lane, or Master Juba. And I guess I was in the mood for stories of real, but not necessarily extremely famous people, because then I started Suzanne: The Jazz Age Goddess of Tennis. Which is a memoir of Suzanne Lenglen, a French female tennis player. She was known, at the time worldwide, but she was not necessarily known for her tennis […]

The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali by Sri Swami Satchidananda

April 5, 2023 by Halbs Leave a Comment

This book is on the suggested reading list of Yoga With Adriene’s Adriene Mischler. It’s the fourth book on the list that I’ve read. While this book is called The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, it does not include all of Patanjali’s yoga sutras. Instead, it contains select sutras, as well as commentary on most of the select sutras. Sri Swami Satchidananda provides the translation and commentary. Sutra literally means “thread”, but here its used more to mean yoga aphorisms.  And yoga here is not hatha […]

The Wishing Flower by A. J. Irving

April 4, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I will start off my review of The Wishing Flower with a slightly controversial observation. While, yes, this book is about a queer child and her feelings acceptance, understanding, and the want for a friend, you can adapt this to also show it is “just” about a child who is a bit shyer, who does not really fit in, but in the end does find a place to fit because she found a friend; that she found someone who accepts her for herself. And in […]

How Am I Just Learning This Now?!

Period Power by Maisie Hill

March 30, 2023 by ASKReviews Leave a Comment

Best for: Anyone who menstruates and wants to know how they can use their cycle to their advantage. In a nutshell: Author Hill looks at different aspects of one’s menstrual cycle, as well as different challenges and complications people face and how to possibly address them. Worth quoting: “The mental switch you need to make is to realise that your feelings here are very real and have nothing to do with your hormones, but your hormones are helping you to give voice to them, and […]

Connor Kissed Me by Zehava

March 23, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

CBR15Passport, author Sometimes a book about consent is not overly realistic. Or at least, I should say it is not like I have or other people I know have experienced. Of course, someone could be harassing you regularly, or assault you/touch/act towards you in an aggressively/uncomfortable manner, but most of the time the actions are “innocent,” but inappropriate. And Connor Kissed Me takes more of that approach. The story (coming mid-September 2023) that Zehava created is simple. Connor kisses Miriam. She does not want to […]
