Is this book prefect? No, but it is a da*n good start

Why? A Story for Kids Who Have Lost a Parent to Suicide by Melissa Allen Heath

May 11, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I am going to say that Why? A Story for Kids Who Have Lost a Parent to Suicide is a terribly sad, but honest, and well-done book. Due in mid-November 2023 anyone who has lost a person to death by suicide should read this. Granted, it might be a bit “touchy feely” but then again it is for kids and not adults. The voice is that of the child and again, honest. They talk about why daddy was sick, that you cannot catch depression (point […]

One peeved off tornado coming through

I Am a Tornado by Drew Beckmeyer

May 11, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I was doing some Twitter browsing the other day, and found this book, that book, and other (screen shot screen shot screen shot). As the TBR list grew, I saw a happy little tornado and the author/illustrator promoting it (or maybe it was a fan, by that time I had really gotten lost in a sea of books and do not remember). That book was named, I Am a Tornado. Why was Drew Beckmeyer’s book eye catching? Again, a happy (or so it looked like […]

Strong in many forms

Brave Mrs. Sato by Lori Matsukawa

I Think I Think a Lot by Jessica Whipple

May 10, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

A few days ago, I read a book, but was unable to write a long review of it. And today I read another book I could have but did not want to weaken it. The issue with Brave Mrs. Sato was not that it is a bad book, far from it, but that is simple and doing over 250 words for a review can overwhelm the reader. Therefore, this is a shorter review than the second one, I Think I Think a Lot. This book […]

Me and the Boss: A Story About Mending and Love. by Michele Edwards

Dragon Bones: The Fantastic Fossil Discoveries of Mary Anning by Sarah Glen Marsh

May 10, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I have not done a picture book marathon in a bit, and the most recent netted four books. Two of them have a lose theme of siblings. The Michele Edwards is an obvious sibling dynamic, where as the book about Mary Anning mentions her brother, and what he did to assist her, but the focus is on her. However, the other theme is that of you may be small, and you will need to take your time, but you can get the job done. I […]

A miss for me, a possible hit for you

Message in the Moon by Roma Downey

May 8, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I started to read A Message in the Moon author introduction. However, I stopped when I saw the phrase “my daddy” and the tone was that of a young child and not an adult. Everyone has their own dynamic with their family, but that was a turn off. And there is no rule saying I had to read it (as I knew it would really color my feelings on the actual story). Therefore, I skipped ahead to Roma Downey’s story. Which also was not for […]

Great – And Get the Audio Version

Me vs Brain by Hayley Morris

May 6, 2023 by ASKReviews Leave a Comment

Best for: People who find their brain — and their heart, lungs, possibly uterus — talking to them. In a nutshell: Tik Tok comedian Hayley Morris shares how she’s dealt with intrusive thoughts and other life challenges with her signature wit. Worth quoting: So much made me giggle, but this was an audio book so I didn’t end up writing any down. Why I chose it: I follow her on Tik Tok and her shit is hilarious. What it left me feeling: Warm and fuzzy […]
