Godboys and Goddessgirls go to school and do teen things

Goddess Girls Graphic V02 Persephone the Phony Graphic Novel by Joan Holub

May 22, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I feel similar about the Goddess Girls Graphic Novel series as I did to PAWS recently. There was nothing new to it and it is flat. However, the interesting part (or at least a fact about the graphic novels) is that the Goddess Girls graphic novels are based on the actual novels of several years ago. At least this makes me wonder how updated they are or are they “old school” mentality? Regardless of their connection to the novels, this book at least can be picked […]

Messy handwriting doesn’t mean you can’t be an author

Abdul’s Story by Jamilah Thompkins-Bigelow

May 12, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I have read parts of Abdul’s Story off and on for a year now. Finally, I was able to find the finish copy and sink my teeth in. This story is how a young boy, Abdul, loves telling stories. But writing them is a lot harder. Besides, why write them down? Some stories are meant to be told. Yet, when an author comes to his class, a man who looks like Abul with his straight lines, and unscuffed shoes, he learns that there are many […]

How do you listen?

Listen: How Evelyn Glennie, a Deaf Girl, Changed Percussion. by Shannon Stocker

May 12, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I will date myself and say when I was a kid there was a show called Punky Brewster. It was edgy for its time, and watching it today, I laugh at how Afterschool Special it was, but I still have found memories. And one of those was a woman, now I forget the actresses name, but she was deaf. In the story she was “just the janitor” and people thought her dumb because of her deafness. In the children’s music class, she was mimicking the […]

The end pages are cute too

Be More Dog by Caroline Crow

May 11, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I am a cat person, but even I can get behind the ideas in Be More Dog. It is really simple, actually, because all Caroline Crow is telling us is that we can find our happiness any place we want, you just have to be more dog sometimes to find it, or just go with the flow. Which just means, that sniffing dad’s old boot is happiness (for a dog, even if you think grandma’s cookies are happiness instead), splashing in puddles is happiness, giving […]

My best friend is usually the one I’m currently reading

This Book Is My Best Friend by Robin Robinson

May 11, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

When you have a best friend who gets you, you always want to be with them. But what happens if your best friend is also someone else’s? Well, that would be a slightly different story than This Book Is My Best Friend, but when two kids in a library find their best friend, a special book about robots and mice, they both want to take it out. But there are two of them, and only one book. As they try and convince the other why […]
