As my nephew once said, ‘TUCK!

I Am Stuck by Julia Mills

June 16, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I am excited over the title I Am Stuck by Julia Mills. Not for the possible reasons you would think (the big one is BEST BOOK EVER), but for the one that is small. I liked it. It is a book about being stuck. Or actually, a turtle who is stuck. And while others try to give advice, it, well, does not help. It is not until the possum comes along and what they do not do, that is the most helpful of them all […]

Baby, you’re a star

Bitsy Bat, School Star by Kaz Windness

June 16, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The theme of Bitsy Bat, School Star is simple. Bitsy does not fit in at school. But as her father says, why would you want to fit in? Afterall, Bitsy is a special star. Her special brain works differently because she is representing a neurodivergent person. She, like the author, Kaz Windness, is autistic. Of course, they do not come out and say that, but just use the natural senses of a bat  to represent the situations an autistic person might encounter. Such as loud […]

Forced to join the yearbook club was the least of his problems

Fearbook Club by Richard Ashely Hamilton

June 12, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I read R. L. Stine (Fear Street), Christopher Pike, Ritchie Cusick, etc, as a teen. Those teen thriller/horror stories that were fun, not overly serious, bit of romance, but had a bit of ghosts and ghouls and always a climax where the villains are unmasked (sometimes literally, sometimes figuratively). And when I was reading Fearbook Club, I figured this must be the younger versions of those authors. Maybe a more humorous Goosebumps. Richard Ashely Hamilton made a story that was (as I said) a fun […]

A sleepy independent boba café, a not so sleepy secret

Super Boba Café V01 by Nidhi Chanani

June 12, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

A fun story that ends a smidgen abruptly was what I felt about Super Boba Café V01 by Nidhi Chanani.  However, this is (as the volume one notes) a graphic novel which is the first book and you know that there will be more to come because of that. Not to mention the very last page has that “dun dun dun” ending where, “That’s all … for now … Folks!” should be added. If you want to find out what that ending is, you need to […]

Ding-dong, the witch is dead.

Mamo by Sas Milledge

June 12, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

A recent Wednesday of no sleep saw me not feeling well on Thursday. Taking the mental health day, I slept, and when I woke up it was too late to work, so I read. One of the books I would read that Thursday was Mamo by Sas Milledge.  This book has an odd feeling to it, or at least to me. I was picking up Scandinavian vibes to the landscape and with most of the people we see. But our main character looks like they […]

The message is not just on the wall

The Crows by Anders Fager

June 12, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I recently read this creepy graphic novel called, The Crows. At first, it acted like it might be one of two things: either a ghost story where the main character is haunted by the ghost of (fill in the blank) a parent(s), grandparent(s), their former self, or some real monster/ghost. Or it would be a descent into madness and everything was hallucinations, just in the characters head. There was the possibility of lots of gore and blood, but that only came into play once physically; […]
