Folk art and an artist

A Tulip in Winter: A Story about Folk Artist Maud Lewis by Kathy Stinson

July 3, 2023 by BlackRaven 2 Comments

cbr15bingo North America: Canada is in North America  Who is Maud Lewis? I had no idea until I found A Tulip in Winter: A Story about Folk Artist Maud Lewis. Kathy Stinson’s picture book (currently available) is a love story to a woman who overcame times of prejudices, and a debilitating  case of rheumatoid arthritis. As a young woman, her parents death and brother selling their home meant she had to move in with an aunt. But she was being treated as a child. Through a […]

Coming to America

It'll Be Irie: Staying True to Yourself by Alejandra Barajas

July 3, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

cbr15bingo On the Road: a young boy immigrates to America I had decided that I did not want to read It’ll Be Irie: Staying True to Yourself by Alejandra Barajas for no other reason than I had read a lot of being yourself type of books and one more was going to be one too many. I then found a physical reader copy and since I prefer reading books that way, I thought I would give it a shot. I am glad I waited for it […]

Even grownups have fears

Melvina Whitmoore (More or Less a Horror Story) by Faith Capalia

July 3, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

cbr15bingo Adulthood: Melvina is an adult, but has relatable issues for all of us. I was looking for a book that was a smidgen more spooky when I picked up Melvina Whitmoore (More or Less a Horror Story). Not that I wanted horror (after all it was a picture book for kids), but something “spooky” (like a ghost who says boo a lot and shakes some chains, or something like that). Instead, we get a story of Melvina Whitmoore who is afraid of everything (spiders, […]

A lovely story about a tough situation

Only for a Little While by Gabriela Orozco Beltg

June 16, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

When I find a book about a subject I know little about, I always wonder, “Is there really a need for it?” And then I read the book. Sometimes I read it and think, no we didn’t need it. Or sometimes I think we do need it, but I feel other books have handled the theme better. But with Only for a Little While by Gabriela Orozco Belt. I figured, we do need it, as I was thinking I know there are books out there, […]

I think I need to give this a second chance

Taking to Water by Jennifer Conlon

June 16, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

This book of poetry reads mostly like a prose fiction story, but not as prose poetry (there is a subtle difference). I am assuming that Taking to Water by Jennifer Conlon is fiction, however, as the protagonist of the book is a woman disliking themselves, their body, their gender and all that is associated with that, and I have not found anything that said Conlon went on that journey themselves (please let me know if I have interpreted this incorrectly). The themes of water (positive, […]

This is ONLY for Aunts, Uncle, and their nieces and nephews

Secret Society of Aunts & Uncles by Jake Gyllenhaal and Greta Caruso

June 16, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I am an Aunt of two or three dozen kids (three biological nephews and goodness knows how many have been “adopted” over the years). And I know two things: one the aunt must be cool, and  two, they must have a little discipline otherwise the two of us (or four when all the nephews were present) will just totally destroy the place! And in the picture book the Secret Society of Aunts & Uncles they know how to be a good aunt and/or uncle. But […]
