All We Need Is Love and a Really Soft Pillow! by Peter H. Reynolds

August 11, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Sometimes I really enjoy the work of Peter H. Reynolds, but sometimes things are only “okay.” With All We Need Is Love and a Really Soft Pillow! I am on the side of more than okay, but not my favorite. The idea is clever with a little monster, Little One, and Poppy together, just the two of them as they only need love. But of course, a really soft pillow (or two) is nice as well. And since it might rain, a shelter is a […]

When the hunky country mouse meet the city mouse and really fell for him

Cuckoos Three by Cassandra Jean

August 9, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Cuckoos Three is a slightly more sophisticated Heartstopper-like story. This is due to the fact we deal with the mental health of the characters earlier on and the artwork is physically darker in colors, but by no stretch too “dark” or “dismal” as the use of color is well done as well. Also, the character Jacob is more edgy (piercings, more openly artistic). There were a few times when I thought I was reading about Nick and Charlie and several times Murry and Jacob even […]

Maple’s Theory of Fun by Kate McMillan

August 9, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I was looking at an online review site that I can easily use, and I saw this brightly done  cartoon cover.  It was as if Lizzy McGuire and Diary of a Wimpy Kid had a book. It was Maple’s Theory of Fun. At first, I thought it was going to be about a girl trying to show us how to have fun. A “how to” so to speak, but then all crap breaks loose. Well, it is about how to do that, but the girl […]

Animal Rescue Friends gang and their furry, feathered, and flying friends

Animal Rescue Friends: Learning New Tricks: Volume 3 by Harriet Low

August 4, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I have not read Animal Rescue Friends volumes one and two, as I happened to find Animal Rescue Friends: Learning New Tricks: Volume 3 as an online reader and thought it sounded interesting without doing further research. It can be a standalone story, but  I assume you should probably read volume one which will introduce you to the characters and why they are working with animals that need to be adopted. This is a clever book and feels as if Babysitters Club’s Little Sister Karen […]

Franklin and Lowe

Rosalind Looked Closer: An Unsung Hero of Molecular Science by Lisa Gerin

Only the Best: The Exceptional Life and Fashion of Ann Lowe. by Kate Messner and Margaret E. Powell

August 3, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Science and fashion do not seem like they would pair well together. However, when the scientist is Rosalind Franklin and the fashionista Ann Lowe, they actually do. Franklin was a woman during a time when girls wore pretty dresses, learned to sew and have families and did not go around discovering DNA. And Lowe was a woman who would work with her family making gowns for grand balls and after her mothers death, would make one of the most famous wedding gowns; one fit for […]

Annette Feels Free: The True Story of Annette Kellerman, World-Class Swimmer, Fashion Pioneer, and Real-Life Mermaid by Katie Mazeika

August 2, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

When looking through the old online reader copy links I found some surprises but others, like Annette Feels Free: The True Story of Annette Kellerman, World-Class Swimmer, Fashion Pioneer, and Real-Life Mermaid was only a small surprise as I like biographies of unknown (or at least mostly unknown) people. And Kellerman is a fairly unknown name today. But that was not the case when she was a swimmer. Taking Australia by storm, a young teen took to swimming like fish takes to swimming. It did […]
